Description

Role

The University of Edinburgh’s Information Services Group (ISG) are hiring an undergraduate student, to work this summer as a User Guidance and Media Intern. The key purpose of this role is to refresh and improve Noteable’s public-facing guidance and media (website, YouTube, and GitHub examples), to help users onboard quickly and avoid common issues.

Within this role, you will gain practical experience in auditing and updating guidance documentation, and testing and reviewing existing Noteable GitHub example notebooks. You will join the Noteable service team who are responsible for supporting and improving the University of Edinburgh’s Noteable data science and teaching platform through clear user guidance, communications, and community-facing materials.

You can expect to start work on the 1st June 2026 and work until the 7th August 2026. You will work between a minimum of 18 to a maximum of 21 hours per week (Monday to Friday) in a hybrid working pattern split between working from home (commutable distance from Edinburgh), and in Forrest Hill. You will be required to attend the office a minimum of one day per week. Your preference on working hours within the above range can be discussed during the interview stage. You will be paid £14.30 per hour, plus £2.59 per hour holiday pay. Payment is one month in arrears, meaning your first payment date (should this position start when expected) will be 28th July 2026.

For more information on what to expect as an ISG Summer Intern and to hear from previous interns, please see our 2026 Summer Internships Webpage.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Auditing and updating Noteable’s public guidance (web pages and user-facing documentation) to remove outdated information, improve clarity, and align content with current features and support processes;
  • Creating and refreshing short “how-to” guides, FAQs, and quick-start steps for key workflows (including upcoming features such as History tab and Bulk Autograder), clearly documenting limitations and common “gotchas”;
  • Reorganising and improving Noteable’s YouTube channel structure and discoverability by updating playlists, proposing improved titles/descriptions, and identifying outdated videos to remove/archive with a short rationale;
  • Testing and reviewing existing Noteable GitHub example notebooks to confirm they run as intended, logging any issues found, and where feasible preparing straightforward fixes (e.g., small edits or pull requests);
  • Collecting and summarising light user input (e.g., 50-10 short interviews and/or survey responses) and turning it into a prioritised list of improvements and drafted updated text for the highest-impact items.

Essential criteria:

  • A current University of Edinburgh undergraduate student (you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). Internships are open to all undergraduate students, except those in their final year of study;
  • Based in the UK for the duration of the work, within commutable distance of Edinburgh, and able to work on campus (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications), and able to attend a Right to Work Check in person if needed;
  • Evidence of strong written communication skills, with the ability to simplify information for a non-technical audience;
  • Proven experience using a variety of digital tools for content creation and collaboration (e.g., Microsoft 365/Teams, OneDrive or similar document sharing platforms, basic web editing/formatting);
  • Evidence of strong organisation skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and manage own workload;
  • A proven ability to follow technical steps accurately (e.g., running a notebook, checking links, reproducing simple issues);
  • A demonstrable interest in supporting continuous improvement, making content clear and accessible;
  • A proven ability to adopt a user-focused mindset when approaching work.
Desirable criteria:
  • A demonstrable familiarity with Python, Jupyter notebooks, and/or R/RStudio;
