Role
The University of Edinburgh’s Information Services Group (ISG) are hiring an undergraduate student to work this summer as a Research Information Systems Metadata Intern. The key purpose of this role is to support the metadata clean-up project for external organisations in Pure, ensuring the accuracy and consistency of research data.
Within this role, you will gain practical experience in verifying and cleaning up metadata and identifying and resolving inconsistencies to maintain data accuracy. You will join the Research Information Systems team, who are responsible for research process support and research information management across the research lifecycle, serving users across the University and external users.
You can expect to start work on the 1st June 2026 and work until the 21st August 2026. You will work between a minimum of 28 to a maximum of 35 hours per week (Monday to Friday) in a hybrid working pattern split between working from home (commutable distance from Edinburgh), and in Forrest Hill. You will be required to attend the office between one to two days per week. Your preference on working hours within the above range can be discussed during the interview stage. You will be paid £13.55 per hour, plus £2.45 per hour holiday pay. Payment is one month in arrears, meaning your first payment date (should this position start when expected) will be 28th July 2026.

Duties and responsibilities
- Following internal guidelines and best practices to ensure data integrity and consistency;
- Verifying and cleaning up metadata for external organisation’s records in Pure, ensuring all affiliations are accurately recorded;
- Identifying and resolving inconsistencies and errors in external organisations to maintain data accuracy;
- Contributing to progress tracking, ensuring tasks are completed accurately and within agreed timescales;
- Contributing to the ongoing data quality initiative, supporting efforts to improve the overall usability and reliability of data in Pure.
Skills and experience
Essential criteria:
- A current University of Edinburgh undergraduate student (you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). Internships are open to all undergraduate students, except those in their final year of study;
- Based in the UK for the duration of the work, within commutable distance of Edinburgh, and able to work on campus (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications), and able to attend a Right to Work Check in person if needed;
- You must be able to attend an in-person interview on campus on the 1st April 2026;
- Evidence of a strong attention to detail, and the ability to work with large datasets;
- Demonstrable experience working with Microsoft Excel (e.g., filtering and sorting);
- A proven ability to follow guidelines and processes while maintaining consistency and data integrity;
- Evidence of strong written and verbal communication skills;
- A proven ability to work effectively in a team;
- Basic familiarity with the MS Office Suite Package (Word, Excel, Outlook) and an eagerness to lean new systems (e.g., Pure).
- Previous experience, or familiarity with, the research information system Pure;
- Demonstrable experience with data quality or data cleaning tasks (e.g., through coursework or prior work experience);
- A proven ability to read or understand information in another language, and an awareness of higher education outside the UK (e.g., through study, work, or international experience).
