Role
The University of Edinburgh’s Information Services Group (ISG) are hiring an undergraduate student, to work this summer as an AI and UX Innovation Intern. The key purpose of this role is to research staff experiences of publishing digital content at the University, exploring how the responsible use of AI and automation can improve their experiences.

Within this role, you will gain practical experience in carrying out user research and developing testable prototypes that could increase efficiency for digital content publishers across the University. You will join the user experience team who carry out research to understand how the University’s audiences experience the University’s suite of digital products, systems and services. The team design, plan and execute user research and analyse findings, resulting in actionable outcomes to improve digital user experiences. You can expect to start work on the 1st June 2026 and work until the 21st August 2026. You will work between a minimum of 28 to a maximum of 35 hours per week (Monday to Friday) in a hybrid working pattern split between working from home (commutable distance from Edinburgh), and in Forrest Hill. You will be required to attend the office a minimum of one day per week. Your preference on working hours within the above range can be discussed during the interview stage. You will be paid £13.55 per hour, plus £2.45 per hour holiday pay. Payment is one month in arrears, meaning your first payment date (should this position start when expected) will be 28th July 2026.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Conducting research with staff users who publish digital content to understand their needs, approaches, working methods, and expectations of AI;
  • Exploring emerging AI tools and technologies relevant to digital content publishing in the University context;
  • Generating creative ideas and technical AI/automation-based solutions based on your research findings;
  • Writing and presenting reports and demonstrations to influence digital content design practices.

Skills and experience

Essential criteria:

  • A current University of Edinburgh undergraduate student (you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). Internships are open to all undergraduate students, except those in their final year of study;
  • Based in the UK for the duration of the work, within commutable distance of Edinburgh, and able to work on campus (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications), and able to attend a Right to Work Check in person if needed;
  • You must be able to attend an in-person interview on campus on the 31st March 2026;
  • Demonstrable interest in AI and automation, applied to improve user experiences;
  • Proven ability to investigate and understand a problem before proposing potential solutions;
  • Demonstrable ability to gather research data and present it to communicate key findings to stakeholders;
  • Proven ability to communicate complex information clearly to a range of non-expert audiences and persuade others to your position.

Desirable criteria:

  • Demonstrable understanding of User Experience (UX) design approaches;
  • Proven familiarity with AI and automation software tools.

Location
Hybrid, split between working from home and in 5 Forrest Hill (EH1 2QL).
