Role
The University of Edinburgh’s Information Services Group (ISG) are hiring an undergraduate student, to work this summer as a Digital Accessibility Intern. The key purpose of this role is to conduct accessibility testing on University platforms and sites, highlighting accessibility issues where the sites do not comply with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2. AA guidance, and document how well assistive technologies work with university platforms.
Within this role, you will gain practical experience in conducting accessibility testing, and writing and updating accessibility statements. You will join the Digital Learning Applications and Media team who are responsible for managing a number of platforms used by staff and students for teaching, learning and assessing (e.g., Learn, Media Hopper Create, and the Academic Blogging Service). You can expect to start work on the 1st June 2026 and work until the 21st August 2026. You will work between a minimum of 28 and a maximum of 35 hours per week (Monday to Friday) in a hybrid working pattern split between working from home (commutable distance from Edinburgh), and in Forrest Hill. You will be required to attend the office two days per week. Your preference on working hours within the above range can be discussed during the interview stage. You will be paid £13.55 per hour, plus £2.45 per hour holiday pay. Payment is one month in arrears, meaning your first payment date (should this position start when expected) will be 28th July 2026.

Duties and responsibilities
- Conducting accessibility testing on a number of sites and platforms, and either updating results where they already exist or documenting findings for a new site/platform;
- Assisting in writing and updating accessibility statements for each platform, clearly documenting the level of WCAG compliance and available support for users who need assistance;
- Providing information about accessibility issues to suppliers, site owners, and service managers to ensure they are easily understood.
Skills and experience
Essential criteria:
- A current University of Edinburgh undergraduate student (you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). Internships are open to all undergraduate students, except those in their final year of study;
- Based in the UK for the duration of the work, within commutable distance of Edinburgh, and able to work on campus (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications), and able to attend a Right to Work Check in person if needed;
- Proven ability to present complex information in a concise and structured manner;
- Demonstrable ability to prioritise own workload and meet deadlines;
- Evidence of a detail-oriented approach to work;
- A proven ability to work well independently, as well as within a team;
- Demonstrable enthusiasm for accessible, inclusive, services.
Desirable criteria:
- Demonstrable understanding/knowledge of the benefits of making websites and platforms accessible;
- Previous studies/knowledge or experience in Informatics, Computer Science, Digital Design, or similar;
- A proven awareness of WCAG guidance, accessibility testing tools, and assistive technologies.
Location
Hybrid, split between working from home and in 5 Forrest Hill (EH1 2QL).
