Role
The University of Edinburgh’s Information Services Group (ISG) are hiring an undergraduate student, to work this summer as an Open Educational Resources Intern. The key purpose of this role is to co-create open educational resources for school teachers, adding them to the University’s award-winning collection on TES Resources. The successful student will also work with the Design team to create and publish new open textbooks and eBooks.

Within this role, you will gain practical experience in creating new open educational resources (OERs) and creating prototype open textbooks and eBooks. You will join the Open Educational Resources team who are responsible for supporting staff and students to create and share free educational resources. You can expect to start work on the 1st June 2026 and work until the 21st August 2026. You will work between a minimum of 21 to a maximum of 35 hours per week (Monday to Friday) in a hybrid working pattern split between working from home (commutable distance from Edinburgh), and in Forrest Hill. You will be required to attend the office a minimum of two days per week. Your preference on working hours within the above range can be discussed during the interview stage. You will be paid £13.55 per hour, plus £2.45 per hour holiday pay. Payment is one month in arrears, meaning your first payment date (should this position start when expected) will be 28th July 2026.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Creating new open educational resources (OERs), and reviewing resources created by staff and students to enable them to be shared as OERs;
  • Checking that all resources (e.g., images, media, etc) are correctly licensed and attributed, contacting copyright holders, and sourcing alternative materials where necessary;
  • Uploading the OERs to TES Resources, adding them to the OER Showcase on Open.Ed, and disseminating them through the OER Service’s social media channels;
  • Creating prototype open textbooks and eBooks, including copyediting, proofreading and preparing eBook content for publication;
  • Writing reflective blog posts and sharing lessons learned.

Skills and experience

Essential criteria:

  • A current University of Edinburgh undergraduate student (you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). Internships are open to all undergraduate students, except those in their final year of study;
  • Based in the UK for the duration of the work, within commutable distance of Edinburgh, and able to work on campus (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications), and able to attend a Right to Work Check in person if needed;
  • Evidence of excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • A proven ability to work effectively in a team;
  • Evidence of strong problem-solving skills, with an ability to collaborate to resolve issues;
  • Competent digital skills and familiarity with online publishing platforms (e.g., WordPress, Flickr, YouTube, Media Hopper Create, Wikimedia Commons);
  • Proven creativity and a detail-oriented approach to work.

Desirable criteria:

  • A proven interest in open education and education outreach;
  • Demonstrable familiarity with Creative Commons licences;
  • Experience of using social media for dissemination and outreach.

Location
Hybrid, split between working from home and in 5 Forrest Hill (EH1 2QL).
