Role
The University of Edinburgh’s Information Services Group (ISG) are hiring two undergraduate students, to work this summer as Audio Visual Skills Interns. The key purpose of this role is to assist in the development of digital skills training courses and support materials, specifically for Audio Visual and Information Technology within the University teaching spaces. The interns will play a key role in identifying training needs and creating high-quality training, online guidance and video content to support the use of in-room technology.

Within this role, you will gain practical experience in designing digital training courses. You will join the Digital Skills, Design and Training, and Learning Spaces Technology teams who are responsible for providing high-quality Audio Visual and IT hardware support, training, and infrastructure across the University’s teaching spaces.

You can expect to start work on the 1st June 2026 and work until the 21st August 2026. You will work between a minimum of 25 to a maximum of 35 hours per week (Monday to Friday) in a hybrid working pattern split between working from home (commutable distance from Edinburgh), and in Forrest Hill. You will be required to work across campus to complete your role, working in Forrest Hill and the Main Library a minimum of one day per week to sit with your team. Your preference on working hours within the above range can be discussed during the interview stage. You will be paid £13.55 per hour, plus £2.45 per hour holiday pay. Payment is one month in arrears, meaning your first payment date (should this position start when expected) will be 28th July 2026.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Familiarising yourself with in-room Audio Visual and IT technology, including Lecture Recording systems, to understand the user experience;
  • Reviewing existing training guides and technical documentation to identify where information is outdated or unclear, and update materials
  • Collaborating with Training, Technology and Lecture Recording service teams to identify digital skills gaps and training needs for both staff and students;
  • Designing digital skills training courses and online materials for academic staff that utilises innovative formats, such as video tutorials or interactive reading materials;
  • Ensuring all developed training materials meet accessibility standards (e.g., Web Content Accessibility Guidelines).

Skills and experience

Essential criteria:

  • A current University of Edinburgh undergraduate student (you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). Internships are open to all undergraduate students, except those in their final year of study;
  • Based in the UK for the duration of the work, within commutable distance of Edinburgh, and able to work on campus (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications), and able to attend a Right to Work Check in person if needed;
  • A proven ability to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information using digital technologies (Digital literacy), and an interest in how technology (AV/IT) supports learning and teaching;
  • Evidence of excellent analytical skills with the ability to review technical content for clarity and accuracy;
  • A demonstrable creative approach to work, which can be applied to designing engaging training courses, resources, and materials;
  • A proven ability to work independently to manage project tasks and coordinate own workload;
  • Evidence of strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with various teams and create engaging materials.

Desirable criteria:

  • Experience in creating digital content and/or user guides for technology;
  • An understanding of online accessibility requirements;
  • Experience of using Audio Visual equipment.

Location
Hybrid, split between working from home and in 5 Forrest Hill (EH1 2QL).
