We are looking for a full time Safety & Facilities Manager, who will lead health and safety compliance across the Faculty, providing expert advice and ensuring all facilities and assets are safe, well maintained, and fully compliant with legislation and university policies. 

  • The role will start late February with an expected end date of 31/07/2026
  • You will be working 37 hours per week on a hybrid basis.
  • Interviews expected w/c 16/02/26

Duties and responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all Health & Safety activity within the Faculty, acting as Faculty Safety Coordinator, Safety Manager and Building Evacuation Controller, ensuring a safe environment for staff, students and visitors.

  • Provide expert H&S advice and guidance, ensuring compliance with legislation, university policies and best practice, with delegated authority to act in urgent risk situations.

  • Develop, implement and maintain faculty H&S policies, procedures, risk assessments and systems of work.

  • Lead audits, inspections, incident investigations and the Faculty H&S Action Plan, monitoring and reporting on compliance and performance.

  • Analyse and report H&S data, supporting faculty strategic objectives and continuous improvement.

  • Support and train staff in risk management, safe systems of work and record keeping, particularly in research and laboratory environments.

  • Work collaboratively with academic, technical, estates and external stakeholders to maintain high H&S standards and deliver safety-related projects.

  • Ensure faculty assets and specialist facilities are safely maintained, overseeing contractor and estates works.

  • Manage relevant budgets, monitoring spend and providing forecasts.

  • Ensure appropriate fire safety, first aid provision and PEEPs are in place across faculty buildings.

Skills and experience

  • Degree in a science discipline (or equivalent experience) with substantial experience in a relevant technical, scientific or facilities role

  • Formal Health & Safety qualification (e.g. NEBOSH)

  • Experience working in research and/or teaching laboratory environments and with a wide range of scientific equipment

  • Strong knowledge of current Health & Safety legislation and its practical application

  • Experience developing H&S policies, procedures, risk assessments, reports and communications for varied audiences

  • Proven ability to plan, organise and manage projects, facilities and competing priorities

  • Experience of managing and controlling budgets

  • High level of initiative with the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision

  • Strong analytical skills, able to interpret complex information and clearly communicate risks and implications to non-specialists

  • Excellent negotiation and influencing skills, including working with senior stakeholders

  • Proven ability to build and maintain effective internal and external working relationships

  • Experience of line management, with the ability to prioritise workloads and optimise team performance

  • Strong team-working skills, with the ability to lead and coordinate teams across the University when required
