Description

Role

***Ringfenced to current undergraduate or postgraduate LJMU students in the social sciences or a related field***

We are seeking a motivated student to provide research support for the project “Just transition from coal in Poland”, led by Dr Mate Subasic.

The project investigates how coal-dependent regions in Poland are navigating the shift away from coal in response to the global climate emergency. Using comparative qualitative fieldwork, the research explores the social, political, and economic factors that enable or obstruct a just transition for affected communities.

Duties and responsibilities

The selected student will support the research during three non-consecutive weeks, scheduled in agreement with the project lead.

Tasks may include:

1. Supporting transcription, coding, or thematic analysis

2. Background research on coal regions, energy transition, and just transition frameworks

3. General research assistance as required

The project is delivered in English. Yet, if a student is familiar with Poland or Polish language that will be considered an advantage, but it is not necessary.

Skills and experience

The successful candidate will be a current undergraduate or postgraduate student in the social sciences or a related field (e.g. political science, geography, environmental studies, sociology). They will ideally, though not necessarily, demonstrate strong academic performance and have some experience in developing literature reviews and coding qualitative data, gained through an undergraduate or master’s thesis or other assessed coursework.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate a strong interest in the project’s research themes, including climate politics, energy transitions, and labour or regional change. Experience with, or a clear interest in, qualitative research methods is essential.

The student should have good organisational skills and be able to work independently, following agreed guidelines and with support from the research lead.
