Description

Role
The University of Leicester is seeking to appoint two Teaching Assistants to support a second-year undergraduate geology field course to Anglesey for 8 days from 13 April 2026 to 20 April 2026.

This residential course focuses on geological mapping and structural geology, with an emphasis on developing students’ skills in field observation, data collection, and interpretation across a range of spatial scales. The role is primarily outdoors and involves being away from the accommodation for the duration of the field day. Teaching Assistants should expect a moderate amount of walking in coastal and rural environments and active engagement with students throughout the course.

Duties and responsibilities
The postholders will proactively provide support to students during the residential field course and contribute to in-field teaching and training in geological mapping and structural geology. This will include assisting students with field techniques, supporting data collection and interpretation, and helping to ensure a positive and effective learning experience in the field.

Skills and experience
Applicants should hold a relevant degree in Geological Science or a closely related discipline and have experience of geological mapping. They should demonstrate knowledge of geological structure data collection, including the use of a compass clinometer to measure bedding, cleavage, fold hinges, and lineations, as well as familiarity with plotting and interpreting stereonets. A willingness to undertake a first aid course, if required, is also essential.
