Description
Role
You will help design and conduct research into undergraduate attitudes towards attendance and engagement. You will meet with the project lead (Dr Katie Monk) to discuss how to structure the research. You will then conduct research into attitudes towards attendance and engagement, including students reasons for non attendance/engagement, and students attitudes towards strategies for increasing attendance/engagement. The methods used to conduct the research will be decided in together with the role holder and Dr Katie Monk during the initial phase of the project. Methods may include individual interviews, group interviews, or anonymous questionnaires. You will be responsible for collecting results (for example by conducting individual interviews, or attending group interviews, or by motivating students to fill in questionnaires). At the end of the project you will be asked to feed results back. You will be supported by Dr Katie Monk during the process, who will lead the project design, support its delivery and help troubleshoot any problems that arise.
Start Date: 1st March 2026
End Date: 21st July 2026
Working Hours: A total of 23.5 hours - to be arranged with the succesful applicant and the manager
Pay Rate: £17.02 per hour
Holiday Pay Rate: £2.05 per hour
Location: University Park Campus, Humanities Building

- Meet with the project lead (Dr Katie Monk) to finalise project design.
- Conduct research into undergraduate attitudes towards attendance and engagement – for example via individual/group interviews, or anonymous questionnaire.
- Analyse results and feed them back to project lead in preparation of final report.
Skills and experience
- A current undergraduate at the university of Nottingham in the School of Humanities.
- Experience in organising groups (ideally groups of students).
- Ability to engage undergraduate students in the project, including hard to reach students (e.g. those who struggle with attendance) across all years of the undergraduate degree programmes (1st, 2nd and 3rd year students).
- Understanding of the current student experience and awareness of issues around attendance/engagement – in particular insight into the factors which affect attendance/engagement at UON.
- Insight into the ways in which attendance/engagement may affect different groups of student in different ways. For example, students from low socioeconomic backgrounds may be more affected by financial pressures.
- Ability to interview individuals and/or groups.
- Skills in writing reports.
