Role
Senior Residential Community Assistants (SRCAs) will have the same responsibilities as a Residential Community Assistant (RCA) alongside additional responsibilities as mentors to other team members. SRCAs act as a liaison between the RCA team and the senior management team (Residential Community Coordinator, RCC) and be responsible for leading shifts and ensuring task completion by the wider team, alongside escalating concerns to Community Safety in the absence of an RCC. You will be responsible for Community Wellbeing, Community Behaviour, Community Engagement and Community Building within the Warwick residential community and support the RCCs and Head of Service in enhancing the provision of the RCT. You will be expected to demonstrate commitment to the residential life of our students by working to create a sense of community that contributes to the development of inclusive hall communities and promote a sense of belonging alongside physical and mental wellbeing.

 
You will work 12-15 hours per week for the entirety of the academic year, including vacation, which includes a rota of on-call (student visa holders are exempt from working on-call). You will respond to incidents and issues throughout your shifts alongside complete proactive engagement to promote wellbeing alongside supporting the Warwick University discipline process, upholding the University’s Values in relation to behavioural expectations.

SRCA specific expectations:
 
  • Meet regularly with RCCs to plan provision, discuss emerging concerns and contribute to the resolution of these individually and as a team
  • Being highly visible and proactively supporting the RCA team
  • Initiating conversation and offering advice and support to RCAs within the four key areas of provision including event management and pastoral support
  • Regularly check in with RCAs, supporting minor concerns and reporting any potential problems to the RCCs
  • Being a consistent role model for the RCA team, challenging any inappropriate behaviour and supporting development
  • To collate feedback and suggestions from the RCAs and SRCA team and relaying these to the RCCs to find areas for improvement
  • Attend any joint meetings across the University with the RCC/Head of Service alongside local team meetings
  • Prioritise personal and professional development
  • Assist in the development of and delivery of Impact Sessions
  • Hold community meetings, where appropriate, to gain insight into provision alongside suggestions for improvement
  • Support in data collection within the RCT for evidence-based service provision
  • Be alert to the needs of new students who may transfer into the community throughout the year
  • Support in operational oversight in the absence of an RCC and acknowledge own limitations to escalate to an appropriate person when required
  • Use initiative to problem solve
  • Have confidence in the oversight of the RCA team to ensure best practice, operational support and oversight and checking workload completion for handover to the following shift
  • Practice risk management when planning and oversighting of events and activities
  • Support the RCCs in the delivery of training throughout the year and support in ensuring all training is completed by RCAs.

Duties and responsibilities

Overall expectations as per RCA role:

  • Work alongside the RCT and wider University teams to develop an inclusive, supportive and safe community for Warwick students living in our halls of residence
  • Act as a role model to students, promoting the core values of Warwick University
  • Be actively visible, available and approachable as a first point on contact for students accessing the service
  • Build rapport with each student in the community, identifying and overcoming any barriers to communication
  • To have good knowledge of University departments and internal and external support services to signpost students to
  • To gather and record confidential and sensitive information in a clear, transparent and thorough way
  • Participate in key events throughout the year, including but not limited to, Arrivals Weekend, Welcome Week, Open and Offer Holder Days
  • Participate in maintaining on-call and office hour provision via the team rota, including during vacation periods throughout the year
  • Engage in 1:1’s and team meetings as directed for personal and professional development alongside key service and/or university updates
  • Be guided by the Senior RCA(s) and utilise their support and guidance
  • Work within University policies and take direction, as required, from Senior RCAs, RCCs and the Head of Service
  • Attend (and complete) all training and 1:1s as required throughout the year to ensure that you are aware of service provision updates and for personal and professional development
  • To uphold the behavioural and attitude standards of the Residential Community Team, as well as comply with Regulation 23 and Regulation 27 at all times

Skills and experience

  • You are expected to reside on campus whilst working as an RCA. Full details of accommodation can be found in the candidate information pack on the RCT webpage, where you will need to apply for the job. You MUST ensure you read and understand these details fully before applying for the role.
  • Full time student at the University of Warwick
  • Experience of living in halls of residence within higher education.
  • One full academic year working as a member of RCT (or equivalent) OR significant leadership experience with demonstratable leadership attributes.
  • Experience of supervising/leading a team, ideally students.
  • Knowledge of the issues that students experience when living in university accommodation
  • Experience of working with highly confidential and sensitive information.
  • Strong knowledge of the operational workings of the RCT and its core values and goals.
  • Experience of working as part of a large team ensuring that the team’s objectives and aims are delivered.
  • Experience of dealing with challenging behaviour and supporting others.
  • Experience of delivering and organising events.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Ability to confidently and successfully lead/guide others; using initiative to problem solve and drive provision in the absence of a manager.
  • Awareness of barriers to engagement for the RCT and solution focussed, measurable ideas to overcome these.
  • Flexible and responsive to service/student needs.
  • Ability to initiate contact with other students with confidence.
  • Ability to manage crisis and incidents calmly and effectively.
  • Ability to identify own limitations and when to escalate concerns to appropriate person.
  • Ability to write comprehensive and factual reports with good attention to detail.
  • Self-awareness and self-reliant and able to use own initiative to problem solve.

Hours and Days of Work 
  • You will be expected to work 12-15 hours per week with shifts between 5pm-10pm Monday to Sunday as part of a rota. There may be some shifts available during the day at key events. These are typically 3x 4 hour shifts, with a potential 1 x 3 hour shift however if scheduled for a weekend shift, this may be 2 x 6 hour shifts, to cover the weekend.
  • You are expected to work for the entirety of the academic year or until your accommodation contract end date, whichever is first. This includes vacation – this is not a term time only role.
  • You will be on-call overnight roughly 1 week in 15, although this may increase to 1 week in 10 9at most) if necessary and based on ongoing review of service provision. On-call provision runs 24/7/365.
  • Currently on-call provision is covered in two blocks: Monday-Thursday 10pm-7am and Friday-Sunday 10pm-7am. Statutory and Customary Days work on a 24 hour on-call provision.
