This research assistant role will support the development of a current research project – Visualising Menstruation: Art Blood and the Liminal Body, conducted by Dr Bee Hughes, Liverpool Centre for Cultural, Social and Political Research. 
 
The VM project aims to expand the canon of menstrual art history significantly, develop new theoretical approaches to the understanding of menstrual art and wider menstrual and feminist visual cultures, and embed public engagement within the academic research through the accompanying podcast. 

Duties and responsibilities

The Research Assistant will support the lead researcher through conducting desk-based research, data collection and synthesis, and contributing to project development:  

• data collection and synthesis: through a combination of desk-based research with international museum catalogues, publications and strategic use of social media and AI-supported searches. 

• contribute to developing a project website that will act as a resource for future researchers, and as art historical Open Data source. 

The VM podcast is written, researched, edited and produced independently by Bee Hughes. If the candidate wishes to, some initial guidance and training in podcasting / editing alongside the other elements of the project may be provided.

Skills and experience

The role requires relevant research experience and skills, preferably to MA Level. The candidate would benefit from a familiarity with and/or interest in contemporary art and art history. 

Essential skills and experience:

- database and web searches

- organising and synthesising data

- visual analysis and categorisation of artwork

- social media research

- ability to use translation software to support research

- data management

Desirable skills and experience:

- writing web copy

- website content development
