Description

Role

The Project Officer will oversee a project led by the Student Carers Working Group and Gender Engagement Group on reviewing the provision and support available for students with caring responsibilities, with a particular focus on outcomes for Postgraduate Researchers (a group that has been identified as particularly under-resourced).

In this role, the candidate is expected to provide specialist analytical support and coordination across the following key areas of the team’s work:

  • Analysing enrolment data to identify demographics, trends, modes of studies, and other characteristics to deepen understanding about the current student population and their caring responsibilities.
  • Organising focus groups to capture qualitative information about the barriers that student carers face and where existing policies, facilities and provision might be reviewed.
  • Assessing and reviewing existing University policies, services and support for students with caring responsibilities.
  • With the support of the working group and project leads, compiling a clear and actionable summary report synthesising key findings from the student records data and qualitative comments from the focus groups.
  • Supporting colleagues in the use and interpretation of student data and other evidence to build a coherent and compelling foundation for institutional support, ensuring that the process is replicable for future years.

We are happy to accommodate flexible working patterns.

About the Department

The candidate would be supervised by Dr Naomi Pullin (Associate Professor in Early Modern History) and by Samantha Grierson (Deputy Chair Gender Engagement Group(University of Warwick) / Director of HE Quality (University College Birmingham) / Sector Chair Programme Leaders Network (QAA)).

Working with the University of Warwick History Department, the work would feed into the Student Carers Working Group and Gender Engagement Group that sit at University Level. This work is supported through funding from Enhancing Research Culture, with a particular focus on childcare provision for postgraduate researchers.

The Student Carers Working Group includes representatives from across the University, including the History Department, Department for Education Studies, the Warwick Award, the Mature Student Experience Group, Market Research and Female Postgraduate Research Students and Early Career Researchers with Caring Responsibilities (FECARE).

Combining quantitative and qualitative insights, the Student Carers Working Group has a core objective to develop a robust understanding of the student carer population and to establish a coordinated institutional approach to identifying, engaging and supporting student carers that combines quantitative and qualitative insights.

The Warwick University History Department is one of the largest history departments in the UK, with teaching and research notable for its disciplinary range and geographical scope. The Department is comprised of ~ 50 academic staff, 5 postdoctoral staff, 13 support staff, ~1,000 undergraduate students, and ~80 postgraduate students. The Department has a strong international reputation and consistently high rankings in both UK and international surveys. In the recent REF 2021 exercise 92% of research was ranked as world leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*). The Department is committed to maintaining and promoting equality, diversity and inclusion amongst its staff and student community.
