The Role:

To enhance the student experience through excellent customer service whilst participating in all aspects of care and maintenance on halls of residence in line with De Montfort Universities core values and Policies and Procedures.

This role is working on campus 37 hours per week - Monday to Thursday 8.30am to 5pm and Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm (1 hour unpaid lunch each day) You will start on ideally on 11/01/2026 with an expected end date of 09/03/2026.

Duties and responsibilities

• Provide excellent levels of Customer Service to students, staff and all visitors to the hall at all times
• Deal with students, staff and visitors in a professional and courteous manner.
• Cleaning of all external areas around the halls including: The Car Park, bin refuge and quad area
• Ensure the entrance and foyer areas are clean and well maintained.
• Ensure all stairwells and landings/ledges /glass panels are cleaned and well maintained.
• Assist in the clearing of student bedrooms in preparation for the Summer deep clean.
• General repairs to fixtures and fittings through out the building.
• Unblocking of sinks/toilets and showers where specialist equipment is not required
• Replacing of light bulbs and fuses to portable electrical appliances
• Replace and re-grouting of wall tiles.
• Repair to door locks.
• Adjust and re- hang wardrobe doors/kitchen cupboard doors and bedroom furniture doors
• Preparation of internal walls and woodwork including filling and painting were needed on a ad-hoc basis.
• Re sealing of sinks (kitchens/bedrooms/showers)
• Health and Safety checks such as fire alarm testing, checking of fire doors and extinguishers.

Skills and experience

• Experience of residential property up-keep & minor repair work.
• Good inter-personal and communication skills
• Good organisational skills Able to carry out minor repairs
• Self-motivated & able to work on own initiative or within a team
• Empathy with young adults
• Reliable and conscientious
• Able to cover the full range of practical duties.
• Knowledge of health and safety and compliance, especially in regards to fire safety.

 

Experience

• Previous caretaking ideally in education environment
• Previous experience working in a customer service focussed environment.
• Practical knowledge of D.I.Y
