Role

Unitemps are recruiting for a Project Researcher, Intercultural Competency in Group Learning Project. This role is suitable for UCL Students Only. This role is for a February 2nd start date and has a projected end date of July 31st 2026. This is a part-time role at 3 hours per week. Payment is set at £16.76 per hour + £3.14 holiday pay. This role will be UCL hybrid working (part from the office and part from home).
 
The Project Researcher will play a central role in the co-creation, development, and evaluation of a practical framework to support intercultural competency in group-based learning at UCL. Working closely with the project leads, the role holder will support student-informed design of tools that enhance equitable participation, communication, and belonging in culturally diverse student groups.
 
The postholder will contribute to co-design workshops, development of toolkit resources, pilot evaluation activities, and dissemination of findings. The role is designed to build research, facilitation, and inclusive education skills while centring lived experience and student partnership.

Duties and responsibilities

Co-creation and Research Support

  • Participate in preparatory training, including engagement with UCL’s Inclusive Education Training Programme materials on intercultural competency.
  • Contribute to the design and facilitation of student co-creation workshops exploring barriers and enablers to effective intercultural group work.
  • Support the identification of key themes, challenges, and good practice emerging from student discussions and reflections.

Resource and Toolkit Development

  • Assist in the development of practical resources, including team charter templates, pre-group activities, reflective prompts, and peer-feedback tools.
  • Ensure resources reflect diverse student perspectives and are accessible, inclusive, and adaptable across disciplines.
  • Support alignment of toolkit materials with module learning outcomes and inclusive education principles.

Evaluation and Data Collection

  • Support low-risk evaluation activities, including surveys, reflective feedback, and focus group data collection.
  • Assist with anonymisation, organisation, and thematic analysis of qualitative data under the guidance of the project leads.
  • Contribute to reflective summaries capturing student experiences of intercultural collaboration and belonging.

Dissemination and Engagement

  • Contribute to preparation of materials for the project showcase event and wider dissemination across UCL.
  • Support integration of the final toolkit into the Inclusive Education Training Programme.
  • Where appropriate, co-author internal reports, blog posts, or presentation materials highlighting project outcomes.

  • Adhere to ethical guidance, data protection requirements, and inclusive research practices at all times.

Skills and experience

Knowledge and Experience

  • Current UCL Postgraduate Student
  • Awareness of intercultural issues in higher education, particularly in relation to group work, communication, or belonging
  • Understanding of inclusion, equity, and student experience in diverse learning environments.
  • Proficiency in more than one language, ideally including Mandarin or Cantonese, to support communication in multilingual group contexts (candidates fluent in any language are encouraged to apply).
  • Familiarity with concepts such as intercultural competency, cultural humility, or inclusive pedagogy.
  • Experience of student partnership, co-creation, or peer-led projects.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work collaboratively and respectfully in culturally diverse groups.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to listen, reflect, and engage constructively.
  • Organisational and time management skills to meet project deadlines.
  • Confidence engaging with qualitative information (e.g., reflections, discussion notes, feedback).
  • Facilitation or co-facilitation of workshops or group discussions.
  • Experience supporting or conducting basic qualitative research activities.
  • Ability to create accessible resources for student audiences.
