About the role:
This is a 12-week paid internship opportunity with Neal Jones Furniture, as part of the WMG Internship Programme. Neal Jones Furniture Ltd. are an innovative and growing UK manufacturer, supplying bespoke and semi-custom luxury furniture on superyachts.
The role involves managing a project where you will be responsible for gathering information to analyse the business, map its primary and supporting business processes, and document them. Typically, this could include identification of key activities performed within the value streams, ensure consensus among parties involved in different business functions, and document the output in the appropriate format. This will enable tacit knowledge of the staff to become company assets, define ways of working, and set a baseline for improvements.
The internship is based at the company site in Lancaster, ​LA1 5XW, you will be working closely with the Neal Jones Furniture team, gaining first-hand experience in a manufacturing business. As part of the Programme, you will also benefit from weekly supervision and support by a WMG engineer throughout the duration of the project.

Duties and responsibilities
You will lead and deliver a project to map business processes of different business functions focussing on project management and product design, with information gathered through a variety of sources, such as employee interviews and existing documents. At the end of the project you will deliver process maps, process definitions and the project report, which will feed digitalisation efforts. You will consider improvement of the business processes and digitalisation aspects during the project work. Duties include:
- Understanding the business and identifying the current state
- Organising the field study and collecting information
- Standardising, streamlining and integrating processes
- Producing business process maps
- Further decomposing high-level process steps into detailed activities where greater clarity or control is required
- Reviewing and improving processes, collaborating with stakeholders to identify process gaps and improvement opportunities
- Documentation and reporting
Skills and experience
ESSENTIAL
- Educated to or working towards a relevant degree (or equivalent); typically in engineering or business administration
- Able to commute to the site on every workday
- Has good communication skills, able to effectively communicate with staff at all levels, and build consensus among various groups
- Skilled at research and analysis of information from a variety of sources
- Interested in working with different business functions, especially product design and project management
DESIRABLE
- Similar process mapping experience
- Project management skills
- Exposure to manufacturing environment or production shop floor
