Description
Role
We are looking for a reliable and dedicated Research Technician to join the research team led by Dr Amy Leedale in the Environmental Research and Innovation Centre in the School of Science, Engineering and Environment at the University of Salford.
In this project, we are investigating the factors driving population expansion in introduced species, using the ring-necked parakeet (Psittacula krameri) as a model system. We will conduct field observations of behaviour in a wild population of birds in Manchester.
This work will contribute to our understanding of how introduced species colonise and persist in new environments.
The Research Technician will work closely with the PI and post-graduate students, liaising with them to ensure efficient and rigorous collection of field data.
The Research Technician will assist with ecological monitoring and behavioural observations in the field; habitat surveys and mapping; data collection and management. The post involves intensive field work across multiple parks and local nature reserves in Manchester, UK.
Duties and responsibilities
Key responsibilities
• Intensive fieldwork on a population of ring-necked parakeets
• Location of nests and monitoring of breeding activity
• Habitat surveys and GIS mapping
• Meticulous record-keeping in the field and prompt data entry
• Maintain accurate and reliable electronic records of obtained data
• Ensure activities are undertaken using correct methodology, ensuring quality, compliance and safety.
Skills and experience
Person Specification
• Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, zoology, or wildlife conservation
• Experience conducting field research on wild birds
• Ability to carry out investigations and experiments using relevant tools, equipment, and techniques
• Ability to follow correct processes and methodologies, ensuring high-quality and compliant work • Ability to work effectively outdoors with minimal supervision, maintaining organisation and minimising waste
• Strong theoretical understanding of scientific principles
• Knowledge of planning, time management, workflow, scheduling, and accurate record-keeping
• Understanding of data storage and handling requirements in line with legislation Application
