Unitemps are recruiting for a Research Assistant - Grand Challenges: Bridging The Gap within the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience department. The role is to work the date of Monday 5th January 2026 and will run until Monday 1st June 2026 part time at 4 hours per week . Payment is set at £20.57+ holiday pay per hour and the role will be HYBRID based.

We are seeking a motivated candidate to join our UCL GC Bridging the Gap project as a Research Assistant (Grade 6B). This project is a one-of-a-kind endeavour -exploring the psychological and cultural factors that shape women’s experiences of returning to work after maternity leave - an important yet under-supported transition with significant implications for wellbeing and career progression. The goal is to develop a workshop sensitive to these considerations for women returning to work from maternity leave at UCL.
The successful applicant will be paid for up to 90 hours (£20.57/hour; total £1,851.30). This is likely to be utilised at approximately 4 hours (or more) per week, providing flexibility alongside other commitments.

Duties and responsibilities
The Research Assistant will have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a funded programme of research aimed at improving support for women navigating this period. There will be several outcomes including 

  • Peer-reviewed publications
  • Conference presentations
  • Potential local policy change
  • Substack writing, networking, social media presence and more.

Skills and experience
This is a fantastic opportunity for a student interested in qualitative or quantitative research, gender and work, women’s and family mental health, and/or evidence synthesis. 

Under supervision, the Research Assistant will undertake a scoping review of the literature, including searching, screening, data extraction and synthesis. They will also support the development of workshop materials such as slides, reflective exercises, and evaluation tools, and assist with workshop delivery. The role offers valuable early research experience and skill development within a supportive academic environment.
 
  • A Masters degree in a related field (e.g Psychiatry, Psychology, Sociology, Social Policy)

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Demonstrable experience of working effectively with others and cooperating with colleagues

  • Experience of working in multi-disciplinary research project teams

  • An interest in working to secure future research funds to support the project aims as a co-applicant 

  • Experience of literature analysis and data synthesisExperience of software and administrative systems commonly used in university project management (e.g., Microsoft Teams)

  • Evidence of scholarship which contributes to the aims of the project (e.g  gender and work, women’s and family mental health)

In this project you will be working alongside Dr Priya Rajyaguru, (Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, Clinical Research Fellow at the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience and Division of Psychiatry) and Professor Charlotte Faircloth (Professor of Family and Society in the UCL Social Research Institute.)
