Description
Role
*Ringfenced to current LJMU HSS undergraduate or postgraduate students who identify as having a disability, chronic mental or physical health condition, a specific learning difficulty, and/ or being neurodivergent. (You do not need to have declared this to the university.)*
The “Equity in Practice” project will evaluate the student experience of HSS undergraduates and postgraduates who are disabled, have chronic mental and/ or physical illnesses, specific learning difficulties, and/ or are neurodivergent to better understand their needs and proactively implement meaningful, evidence-based, anticipatory, and inclusive changes to the School’s teaching and support practices. The project will be led by Dr Nadine Leese, the HSS Disability Coordinator, in collaboration with seven student interns to create a comprehensive qualitative and quantitative review – through, for example, questionnaires, focus groups, and individual consultations – that is designed with students for students.
The project requires one undergraduate intern per subject area (creative writing; English literature; history; international relations and politics to work for a total of 25 hours for the duration of the project, and one postgraduate intern to cover all subjects at postgraduate level and provide wider project support to work for a total of 50 hours for the duration of the project. However, where appropriate and mutually agreed between the project leader and prospective interns, two interns may be recruited to cover one subject area and share the position and the total hours available. This is to ensure the project is inclusive and caters to those whose abilities and skills might be impacted by their disability, chronic illness, learning difficulty, or neurodivergence. For example, applicants who feel unable to work in group settings (such as focus groups) or struggle with verbal communication may wish to share the role with someone who is comfortable to carry out these aspects of the position.
Duties and responsibilities
Interns will be instrumental to the success of the project and to gathering and evaluating meaningful data that allows us to implement the best possible support for our students. Interns will have the following responsibilities under the guidance of and in collaboration with the project leader:
• Co-design the project’s activities;
• Co-design appropriate participant information and consent sheets;
• Support participant recruitment in their subject area;
• Advise prospective participants on the details of the project;
• Evaluate the data gathered for their subject area and write up a report;
• Assist in the production of the final School-level report;
• Co-design a presentation about the project findings.
Skills and experience
Applicants must be current HSS undergraduate or postgraduate students and identify as having a disability, chronic mental or physical health condition, a specific learning difficulty, and/ or being neurodivergent. (You do not need to have declared this to the university.)
Interns will require the same skills and knowledge their programme of study requires from them. We want to ensure interns can further develop their strengths as well as widen their skill set where appropriate, and for this to be an inclusive opportunity. A combination of some, but not necessarily all, of the following skills will be required:
• Good writing skills;
• Ability to analyse and interpret quantitative and qualitative data;
• Good verbal communication skills;• Good interpersonal skills;
• Attention to detail;
• Good organisational skills and ability to work to deadlines;
• Good knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
• Dealing with confidential data in accordance with LJMU’s policies.
This is an internship and as such should be seen as an education and career development opportunity, carried out under the strict guidance of LJMU staff.
