Role
We are recruiting a student to support and deliver cleaning services at Jean Muir Student Village. This role will take place at the Heriot-Watt University Scottish Borders Campus in Galashiels.
The role holder will be offered shifts up to 20 hours per week. Initially, these shifts will be during Monday-Friday 9am-5pm hours. Once training is complete, out of hours and weekend work will also be possible.
We are looking for someone who can start working as soon as possible. This role will initially be for two months, but there might be an option to extend it beyond this.
Duties and responsibilities
- Carry out deep cleaning tasks to bedrooms, kitchens, public areas and university buildings including teaching and office space as directed. This includes cleaning, washing, sweeping, mopping, dusting, power washing, scrubbing and vacuuming designated areas to the required standard.
- To maintain environment: deep clean carpeted and non-carpeted areas, soft furnishings; fixtures and fittings; walls; storage areas; domestic kitchens and pantries in the Halls of Residence.
- When required, use and operate powered equipment - scrubbing machines, wet pick up machines, carpet cleaning machines.
- Set up and turnaround of accommodation and academic spaces for student and non-student business throughout the year. This includes paperwork distribution, changing and provisioning of mattress protectors and shower curtains, bed linen, complimentary items, Freshers' Welcome materials.
- Collect rubbish and dispose of correctly using appropriate bins, including kitchen refuse and recycling.
- Attending to floods and emergency cleaning, carry out special cleaning - sanitising / cleaning human waste.
- Duty of care to all students, visitors and colleagues of the University and Halls of Residence.
- At all times follow and adhere to University policies and procedures relating to Health and Safety, Fire and other relevant policies.
- Be responsible for keys issued and the unlocking and securing of all designated areas before and after cleaning.
Skills and experience
Essential
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to operate powered equipment such as vacuums and scrubbers.
- Ability to deal in an appropriate manner with a wide range of customer behaviours including aggression, distress and cultural living differences.
- Ability to recognise and respond to the varying requirements of customers.
Desirable
- Experience in housekeeping.
