The Major Projects Service plays a pivotal role in the delivery of major transport infrastructure schemes supporting the Council’s ambitions for growth, wellbeing and sustainability across Wigan Borough, and this opportunity is at the heart of this agenda. 

Working to the Project Manager in the Major Projects Service you will assist with developing multi-modal transport and regeneration infrastructure projects to improve the Borough’s connectivity through supporting place shaping, decarbonisation,health and wellbeing and growth and inclusivity.

Duties and responsibilities

  • You will assist with preparing project plans, programmes/schedules and other associated project management documentation such as risk registers, issue and change logs and progress reports. 
  • You will assist with managing the financial and resource elements of projects, ensuring that projects are delivered effectively and provide best value. 
 
By the end of the internship, you should have a better understanding of project management principles, in particular associated with transport infrastructure, supporting regeneration schemes and business cases.

Skills and experience
In this job you will:

  • Be a level 5 or 6 student from Liverpool John Moores University.
  • Complete a 100-hour placement with Wigan Council’s Major Projects team between Monday 2 February to Friday 24 April2026.
  • Assist with various project management tasks including feasibility, development, design, consultation and delivery of major projects and regeneration schemes to help the Council, directorate and service meet their performance targets and objectives. 
  • Operate in line with Wigan Council policies and procedures.
  • Ensure you operate within GDPR guidelines by regularly reviewing data held and destroying information in line with retention schedules 
  • Have a flexible approach including the ability to work and travel to Wigan’s office base on Wednesdays.

  • Gain valuable insight into public sector operations, develop your project management skills, and leave your mark on projects that support real change in the community.
  • Be willing to complete mandatory e-learning, including GDPR and cyber security.
  • The ability to work accurately and follow instructions.
  • The ability to plan work and manage your own time.
  • The ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • The ability to travel between locations to meet service needs. 
  • The ability to work flexibly as part of a team to meet service needs, within the core hours of 9am - 5pm.
  • To be enthusiastic and committed to providing excellent customer care
  • The ability to be proactive and use own initiative.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues and customers.
