Strawberry Field, the iconic site managed by The Salvation Army and immortalised by John Lennon and the Beatles, is a visitor attraction at the heart of Liverpool tourism. The centre offers an authentic experience with a strong commitment to responsible tourism running central to every aspect of its operation.
In addition to our commercial offerings of a Visitor Exhibition, Imagine More Café, gift shop and beautifully designed gardens, the centre is also home to the Steps to Work Programmes, a set of initiatives for members of the community who have learning difficulties or barriers to work, providing them with valuable support and opportunities for meaningful employment. The site also hosts the Fresh Expression Team, who run various groups and activities to engage and uplift the local community, including those with additional support needs.
Strawberry Field is committed to creating a welcoming and accessible environment for all visitors, reflecting our ethos of inclusion, compassion, and community engagement. The building was designed with sustainability, accessibility and inclusivity at its core, achieving several notable environmental and inclusivity nominations and awards.
However, we are continually seeking ways to enhance our facilities and visitor experience. To support this ongoing commitment, we are looking for a student to undertake an accessibility and inclusivity audit of our centre assessing how well the attraction caters to diverse visitor needs, including those related to disability and neurodiversity.
The audit will help us to benchmark our current practices, highlight our strengths, identify areas for development and provide practical recommendations to enhance inclusivity across our physical spaces, visitor experience, digital presence and marketing materials to ensure we continue to offer the most welcoming and inclusive environment possible for all visitors.
Duties and responsibilities
Project Objectives:
- Participate in induction and site familiarisation.
- Review Strawberry Field’s mission and visitor journey.
- Research best practices and relevant UK accessibility and inclusivity standards (e.g., Equality Act 2010, VisitBritain’s Accessibility Guidance, WCAG for web content).
Phase 1 Outcome: Benchmark report.
Phase 2: Audit and data collection. Evaluate Strawberry Field’s existing accessibility measures and practices.
- Conduct a site accessibility audit, focusing on: entrances, pathways, signage, and facilities (café, shop, toilets, gardens), exhibition spaces and interactive displays, emergency/health and safety procedures and accommodations for diverse needs.
- Evaluate digital and resource accessibility (website, booking system, printed materials).
- Carry out short interviews with staff, volunteers and key stakeholders to understand lived experiences and to develop key themes relating to accessibility and inclusivity.
- Identify barriers or challenges for specific visitor groups.
Phase 2 Outcome: Summary of findings and evidence portfolio.
Phase 3: Analysis and recommendations - produce a detailed report with evidence-based strategies for improving inclusivity and accessibility
- Compile findings into a structured and visually engaging accessibility and inclusivity report.
- Identify quick wins (low-cost improvements) and long-term recommendations (strategic developments).
- Present key findings and recommendations to the Strawberry Field management team.
Phase 3 Outcome: A comprehensive audit report with clear, actionable recommendations.
Additional Expected Project Outcomes
- Increased organisational understanding of accessibility and inclusivity needs.
- Practical suggestions to improve the visitor journey for all audiences.
- Enhanced confidence in meeting accessibility standards and promoting inclusivity publicly.
Skills and experience
The successful candidate will:
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage professionally with all members of the team.
- Work independently, showing initiative in conducting research and generating innovative ideas to advance the project.
- Possess strong analytical skills, capable of evaluating information and producing comprehensive, well-structured reports on their findings.
- Present findings confidently to the team in a clear, professional and engaging manner.
- Effectively manage their own workload to meet agreed deadlines.
- Be proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
It would be preferable if the student has some knowledge of accessibility and inclusivity standards and best practice. We would welcome applications from all students, however this project may suit students from Environmental Science courses dueto the nature of the task.

Additional information
The Salvation Army is accredited as a Disability Confident Leader, promoting a positive culture and prioritising the needs of disabled people in our workplaces. This is seen through the development of our policies, processes, and in our recruitment practices through the use of reasonable adjustments.
We welcome applications from all students and actively encourage candidates to disclose any reasonable adjustments they may require, so we can ensure appropriate support throughout the recruitment process. We will be happy to consider all applications regardless of disability disclosure and will offer interviews to anyone who meets the project brief.
