This placement is with Hypno Switch, a Birkenhead-based start-up offering affordable, evidence-based hypnosis audio tracks. The company has a website and native apps, currently providing two product types:

Hypno Now: pre-made tracks for instant download.

Hypno Switch: personalised audio experiences generated via a six-question quiz, which is the USP.

The company is looking to expand its content offering to include complementary products, including daily affirmations and guided meditations, and enhance the overall user experience.

The student will work directly with the CEO to update and enhance the existing web and app prototype. This is a remote placement, providing practical experience with digital product design, UX, accessibility, and interactive prototyping.

Duties and responsibilities
Main duties include:

  • Reviewing existing web/app flows to identify UX friction points and producing a concise report with recommendations (~10–15hours).
  • Integrating accessibility improvements directly into the updated prototype (~5–10 hours).
  • Researching and documenting how a personalisation algorithm could be introduced into existing flows (~10–15 hours).
  • Updating fully branded wireframes and creating an interactive, developer-ready prototype incorporating new content types such as affirmations and meditations (~60–70 hours).
  • This placement allows the student to contribute to a real-world digital product, delivering a production-ready prototype while gaining hands-on experience across UX, accessibility, and product design.

Skills and experience
Required skills and experience:

  • Prototyping expertise: Must have experience with Figma, Visily, or Adobe XD, and be able to lead the technical implementation of agreed plans.
  • UX & design knowledge: Able to review user flows, identify friction points, and implement improvements.
  • Accessibility understanding: Able to incorporate inclusive design considerations into web and app prototypes.

Additional desirable skills:

  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Good communication for documenting findings and presenting recommendations.
  • Ability to work independently on a remote placement while following guidance from the CEO.

Target degrees:

  • Computing
  • Interaction Design
  • UX Design
  • Digital Media

Learning outcomes:

  • Hands-on experience with real-world digital product prototyping for both web and native apps.
  • Practical application of UX research, accessibility, and personalisation principles.
  • Experience delivering developer-ready wireframes and interactive prototypes.
  • Exposure to the full product development cycle in a start-up environment, including expansion of content types and feature updates.

Note on weighting:

  • Prototype creation (updated web & app flows with new content): ~60–70 hours (~60–70%)
  • UX review & recommendations: ~10–15 hours (~10–15%)
  • Accessibility integration: ~5–10 hours (~5–10%)
  • Personalisation research (six-question quiz logic improvements): ~10–15 hours (~10–15%)

This ensures a well-rounded placement where underpinning planning, research, and accessibility improvements are essential to the success of the prototype.
