Description

Role

Unitemps are recruiting for a Research Assistant (User research for AI teaching platform). This role is for an asap start date (end November) and has a projected end date of March 31st 2026. This is a part-time role at 18 hours per week. Payment is set at £20.57 per hour + £3.85 holiday pay. This role will be UCL hybrid working with part from the office and part from home.

AI-technology advances and develops at an increasingly fast pace, thereby asking for innovative methods to teach and train researchers and AI-tool users at a similar pace. Traditional teaching approaches (i.e., fixed curriculum and worked up training materials) may be too slow to adapt to change and risk missing the training needs and alienating experts (who are likely to know more about AI in their niche than the tutors). Additionally, the teaching methods and content need to cover not only the technical and/or practical data science skills, but also the deeper understanding of the potential risks and weaknesses when applying AI methodologies in a research context.

As part of this new project, you will work with stakeholders, including researchers and other data science professionals to identify what AI teaching and skill-development needs they may have. The aim is to scope out existing user profiles, available infrastructures as well as users’ perceived challenges and needs around AI skill development. This scoping exercise will lay the foundation for any future work, where in the first instance we will explore the feasibility and potential design of a new, open-source training platform that will not only meet users’ needs, but will also be dynamic enough to keep up with the fast pace of AI innovations. We will deliver an overview of current user needs, technological requirements and a prototype of an AI training platform, which will be shared with the open-source community.

Duties and responsibilities

The Research Assistant has a crucial role to play in supporting the study leadership team and especially the digital product developer in designing and conducting surveys, interviews, workshops or focus groups to engage with researchers and other stakeholders in the field to identify their AI/Data Science training needs. You will analyse the data and information to develop and understand user journeys, different user profiles and to create a final report that outlines the key design, content and tech requirements of a new training platform that aims to teach AI Data Science skills to researchers and academics. You will get unique insights into state-of-the-art data science, UX-design and technology and teaching innovation.

You will be involved in:

  • Digital product development and design: support the PI and product developer by engaging with stakeholders and users to identify and map out user journeys, profiles to inform the development and design of a new AI Data Science teaching platform.
  • User research: design and conduct user interviews, surveys and workshops with key users to identify user needs.
  • Literature search: conduct a literature search to scope innovative teaching methods that could be applied.
  • Project management: Help coordinate tasks to support the delivery of the project.
  • Communication and outreach: Support outreach and dissemination activities online (e.g. webinars, workshops).

You will need excellent IT, project-management, communication and interpersonal skills as well as experience in collecting and analysing user data to inform design decisions. You will be expected to work closely with the study investigators. You will be a key player in the long-term success of this exciting project, and the role will provide ample opportunity for career and skill development in and outside of academia. You will work across disciplines, drive technology and innovation, and will be invited to contribute to a variety of outputs including blogpost, visual materials as well as papers and reports spanning across different disciplines, including social sciences, human computer interaction, AI and data science
