Description
Role
We are seeking a Research Assistant to support an innovative research project which explores the relationship between foreign aid and local skills in developing countries.
The successful candidate will be responsible for mapping foreign aid which has targeted skills development in developing countries since 1960. This will involve an examination of international development cooperation policies on aid for skills and NGO activities in this area. The exercise will draw on key international agreements on skills (such as those under the MDGs and SDGs), as well as relevant policies by key donor like the World Bank, UN agencies, EU, USAID, GIZ, FCDO, AfDB, etc.
The research assistant will report to the Principal Investigator, Dr Jamelia Harris.
Duties and responsibilities
- Identify and catalogue aid policy documents, agreements, frameworks, etc which relate to education/skills training/skills development in developing countries
- Read the relevant documents and summarise how each may have shaped local skills in developing countries
- Analyse documents, extracting trends and patterns and visualise these where appropriate
- Contribute to the literature review on aid and skills in developing countries
- With the PI, draft a summary report detailing the main findings
- Document research procedures and maintain organised research records
Skills and experience
Essential
- Master's level qualification in a Social Sciences discipline or equivalent research experience
- Background in development studies/international development (e.g. degree or work experience)
- Strong qualitative research skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment
- Excellent organisational skills with ability to meet research deadlines
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Desirable
- Knowledge or experience working with development partners
