Description
Role
We are seeking an enthusiastic and people-oriented Research Assistant to support our important research project. This role involves liaising with external partners, managing relationships with research participants, co-conducting interviews, assisting with ethical approval, convening meetings, and contributing to general project management activities. There may be some local travel to engage with our partners. While this position is primarily people-focused, understanding of technology development will be beneficial. This is an exciting opportunity could platform future roles within project management.
About the Fast-Litter Project: The University of Gloucestershire research project is delivered through co-production with a borough council and Litter Community Group.
It will produce:
- A real-time data dashboard for councils to visualise litter hotspots and trends that inform action and policy.
- A public-facing mobile app designed to capture geo-tagged, timestamped images of litter, collect data, and gamify activism.
- An open-weight and open-source AI image recognition (YOLOv8) model to identify litter types, material, and brands from photos.
Duties and responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
- Liaise with external partners and manage stakeholder relationships.
- Recruit and engage research participants; conduct interviews and data collection.
- Assist with ethical approval processes and documentation.
- Support general project management tasks, including scheduling and reporting.
- Contribute to technology-related aspects of research where applicable.
- Support public engagement initiatives as required.
Skills and experience
Essential Requirements:
- Knowledge of and skills in using project management software (e.g. Planner).
- MSc or PhD level qualification.
- Knowledge and understanding of business and organisational processes.
- IT Literacy, proficiency using large language models, excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Organized, proactive, and able to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
- Ability to build productive working relationships with a range of stakeholders.
- Interest or experience related to litter, waste management or environmental/ecology-based projects including volunteering or internships.
- Prior experience as a Research Assistant or in relevant project-based work.
- Understanding of technology development processes or AI.
- Experience in social media marketing or public engagement campaigns.
- Experience or interest in qualitative research.
