Description

Role
*Ringfenced to current LJMU students with a declared disability with LJMU disability service*

LJMU provides assistive technology to support students with disabilities, but these tools were chosen by staff, not by the students who actually use them. We're changing that approach. This project puts students in charge of evaluating and improving our assistive technology provision.

Duties and responsibilities
You'll be a research partner, not a research subject. That means you'll help design the project, test the technology, and create solutions.

You will:
• Test LJMU's current assistive technology tools while completing your assignments during the winter assessment period.
• Help design and promote a university-wide survey about assistive technology needs.
• Reflect honestly on what works, what doesn't, and why.
• Work with staff and other student partners to create a practical toolkit for future students.
• Have an opportunity to present findings at the Students at the Heart conference in June 2026.

Skills and experience
You need to:

• Be a current LJMU student.
• Have a declared disability with LJMU Disability Services (neurodiversity on the diagnostic pathway is accepted).
• Be willing to try different assistive technology tools during your winter assessments.
• Be able to reflect, evaluate and write a critical review of your experience.
• Be honest about your experience, even when things don't work wel.l

You do not need:
• Research experience.
• Technical skills or knowledge about assistive technology.
• Experience using assistive technology before.

We're looking for a diverse group of students across different study programmes, different levels of study (undergraduate, postgraduate, etc.), and different levels of comfort with technology.
