Role
Capturing the Social Value of Welsh Designated Landscapes using the SOCIAT Framework
This project (Capturing the Social Value of Welsh Designated Landscapes using the SOCIAT Framework), is delivered in partnership with Tirweddau Cymru Landscapes Wales (TCLW) and will adapt and apply the University of Warwick’s SOCIAT social impact assessment framework to capture and communicate the social value of Welsh designated landscapes. The work will inform Welsh policy areas related to wellbeing, health, biodiversity, housing, and community resilience. To find more about SOCIAT please visit www.warwick.ac.uk/sociat.
The Research Fellow will support the application of the Welsh-adapted SOCIAT framework, contributing to storytelling interviews with communities living near Welsh designated landscapes. The postholder will work closely with Welsh partners and stakeholders to ensure that research outputs reflect the cultural and policy context of Wales.
Duties and responsibilities
- Assist in adapting and finalising the SOCIAT interview guide for the Welsh context.
- Conduct interview data collection across the eight designated landscapes of Wales (National Parks and National Landscapes).
- Liaise with Tirweddau Cymru Landscapes Wales and other project partners to support community engagement and data gathering.
- Analyse data from the interviews using appropriate software (e.g. NVivo).
- Collect, record, and manage qualitative data in accordance with ethical and data protection requirements.
- Contribute to the preparation of project outputs including reports, case studies, and communications materials.
- Participate in stakeholder workshops and dissemination events in Wales.
- Support general project administration, coordination, and progress reporting as required.
Skills and experience
Essential Criteria
- A degree (or equivalent experience) in social science, human geography, sustainability studies, or a related discipline.
- Experience in qualitative social research methods
- Ability to engage confidently with diverse stakeholder groups including local communities and public-sector partners.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organisational skills and ability to work independently and as part of a small, distributed team.
- Willingness to travel to and within Wales for data collection and events.
Desirable Criteria
- Ability to speak and/or write in Welsh (Cymraeg).
- Knowledge of the Welsh social, policy, or environmental governance context.
- Experience of working on participatory research or community-based projects.
- Familiarity with data analysis software (e.g. NVivo, SPSS, Qualtrics).
