Role

Unitemps are recruiting for a Technical Officer within the Cruciform Teaching Laboratories department. The role is to work ASAP and will run until 31st December 2025 full time at 36.5 hours per week. Payment is set at £19.14+ holiday pay per hour and the role will be CAMPUS based.

The Cruciform Teaching Laboratories (CTL) is responsible for providing the majority of practical year one and two undergraduate teaching for the Division of Biosciences and Medical School (about 20% of the total UCL undergraduates). In addition the CTL provides a small amount of Masters, Postgraduate and CPD teaching. The Unit comprises two wet labs for biochemistry, molecular biology and microbiology teaching, two dry labs for physiology, anatomy and computer-aided learning, and a purpose-dedicated pharmacology laboratory. 
There are over 1,000 direct contact hours with student groups per year, plus attendant preparation and take-down times. The Unit has a direct impact on the student experience at UCL so it is important that the best possible service is delivered at all times. The post-holder will be expected to work with the team and manager across all aspects of the CTL. This includes; ensuring smooth delivery of practical sessions; liaising with academic and teaching staff about the provision of their practical sessions, assisting with the development of future practical teaching requirements. In addition Technical Officers need to be proactive in planning for future practical requirements.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Liaise with and support the head of the unit and assist other technical staff in the preparation, setting out, moving, lifting and clearing away of instruments, equipment, computers and other items required for classes held in the laboratories of the CTL, to ensure a competent and professional service.
  • Work safely within the Laboratory areas. 
  • To be competent with regard the safe use and disposal of chemicals, liquids, microbiological samples, solvents etc. and with due regard to the safety of colleagues and co-workers. 
  • To understand and follow relevant safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Instruct and otherwise guide students and other lab workers in the scientific method, and the correct use of laboratory equipment.
  • Advise and guide laboratory users unfamiliar with the CTL laboratories (or particular practical sessions) on the workings of the Unit.
  • Carry out and keep records of repair, maintenance, calibration and general servicing of laboratory equipment. To report major faults to the CTL Management.
  • Deal with student and teaching staff general requirements during practical classes and to instruct users in the safe and proper use of equipment.
  • Ensure the ‘safe’ collection and disposal of laboratory waste.
  • With reference to written schedules and preparation sheets, ensure stock levels of laboratory items are sufficient and that any ordering requirements are dealt with in a timely fashion.
  • Prepare biological tissues and samples as required.
  • Maintain accurate records, write up reports and update method sheets etc. as required.
  • Install and set up audio visual equipment used within the CTL and associated teaching areas.
  • Ensure that the laboratories are well-maintained, and kept neat and tidy at all times.

Skills and experience

  • Minimum of Level 5 qualification (advanced City and Guilds, BTEC Higher, or equivalent NVQ) in relevant subject or equivalent experience. 
  • Higher (degree level) qualifications are acceptable.
  • Experience of safe working in relation to laboratory procedures within strict health and safety guidelines with due regard to local codes of practice and COSHH regulations.
  • Familiar with techniques used in teaching undergraduate practicals in fields such as Biochemistry, Biology, Molecular Biology, Pharmacology and Physiology.
  • Manual handling, lifting and moving laboratory equipment using suitable devices.
