The University of Leicester is seeking enthusiastic, reliable and motivated Duty Managers to join our Sport & Active Life team. This role is central to ensuring the smooth and safe operation of our sports facilities, providing exceptional service to our students, staff and community members. As the senior operational lead on shift, you will oversee daily activities within our facilities, which include a swimming pool, sauna, steam and spa areas, fitness suites, studios and outdoor pitches.

Duties and responsibilities

As Duty Manager, you will act as the senior member of staff on shift, leading and supervising the reception, fitness and recreation teams to ensure smooth and efficient operations. You will be responsible for maintaining high standards of cleanliness, safety and presentation across all facilities, as well as overseeing daily maintenance, completing regular equipment checks and reporting any defects promptly.

Customer service will be at the heart of your role. You will provide a visible and approachable management presence for members and visitors, handling feedback and complaints in a professional and solutions-focused manner. You will ensure that all users experience a positive and inclusive environment that aligns with the University’s commitment to quality and respect.

Health and safety will be a key aspect of your responsibilities. You will act as the first responder to emergencies, including incidents within the swimming pool, sauna, steam and spa areas. You will complete daily health and safety checks, ensuring all incidents and maintenance issues are recorded and addressed in line with University procedures. If you do not already hold a Swimming Pool Emergency Rescue Award (SPERA), full training will be provided.

You will also manage bookings, memberships and financial transactions through the University’s online system, maintaining accurate records of payments, incidents and shift handovers. Administrative duties will include supporting staff rotas, assisting with performance discussions and ensuring effective communication between shifts to maintain consistent service standards.

Skills and experience

Applicants should have a minimum of five GCSEs at grades A–C or equivalent, together with experience in a customer-facing role within a sport or leisure environment. A sound understanding of health and safety procedures and the ability to remain calm and decisive in emergencies are essential. You will be confident using IT systems, including Microsoft Office and booking software, and able to lead and motivate a team while taking responsibility for operational decisions.

A First Aid at Work certificate, an NPLQ Lifeguard or Pool Plant Operators qualification, and a Swimming Pool Emergency Rescue Award (SPERA) would be advantageous, although not essential.

Additional information

This is a full-time post of 35 hours per week, worked across five days out of seven, including early mornings, evenings and weekends, within the sports centre’s operational hours of Monday to Friday, 6:00am to 10:30pm, and Saturday and Sunday, 7:30am to 8:00pm. Uniform will be provided. 
 
Duration is 3 months (with potential for extension)
