Role
The University of Edinburgh is currently offering a part-time opportunity for a student to join the Digital Skills, Design, and Training Team as an Assistant Wikimedian in Residence. The Digital Skills, Design, and Training team provide digital skills development and open educational resources to staff and students at the university. Within this role you will raise awareness of how the free and open Wikimedia projects (Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikisource) can support excellence in learning, teaching and research.
This is an exciting opportunity for you to gain experience in promoting and delivering Wikimedia activities, such as the Women in Red events, whilst developing your communication and events management skills.
You can expect to start work on the 25th November 2025 and work until November 2026. You can expect to work 7 hours per week in our office in Edinburgh, Argyle House. During this position, you will be paid £13.01 per hour, plus £2.35 per hour holiday pay. Payment is one month in arrears, meaning your first payment date (should this position start when expected) will be 19th December 2025.
Duties and responsibilities
- Promoting and advocating the use of Wikimedia throughout the university and beyond;
- Working with schools and student societies to develop ways that open Wikimedia projects can support Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) and excellence in teaching, learning and research;
- Managing and delivering events to grow a sustainable community of knowledge activities within the university, such as Women in Red and the Edinburgh Award;
- Reviewing and improving video resources, web content, social media content, and writing blogposts updating the community on your progress;
- Developing face-to-face classroom and online self-led training materials and resources to aid the learning of new data literacy skills for students, staff, and our research community. This will involve designing a content plan, writing content, piloting the event or materials and responding to feedback, running the event independently and publishing materials online.
Skills and experience
Essential criteria:
- A current student at the University of Edinburgh (this post is designated for UoE student employment; therefore, you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). You also must not hold the position of ‘Resident Assistant’;
- Based in the UK for the duration of the work, able to work on campus when required (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications), and able to attend a Right to Work Check in person if you are a British or Irish Passport holder;
- Proven competency in one of the following: Wordpress, MS Word, Wikipedia, Webpage creation/design, video creation;
- Evidence of strong written and verbal presentation skills with the ability to present complex information simply and effectively;
- Demonstrable organisational and time management skills;
- Proven experience of helping to plan and deliver events and coordinate activities and workload;
- Ability to creatively devise engaging, customer-focused training and supporting materials, and social media posts.
- Evidence of effective decision-making skills and the ability to work independently and use initiative;
- Previous experience in teaching others or public speaking;
- A proven interest in, and understanding of, Wikipedia.
