The role:

To provide one-to-one Specialist Study Skills support to De Montfort University students who are eligible for the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) and have Specific Learning Differences (SpLDs) such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, or dyscalculia. The role focuses on empowering students to develop independent learning strategies, improve their academic confidence, and overcome barriers to learning, in line with DSA Quality Assurance Framework standards.

Working Hours are Variable, minimum of 10 hours a week (term time) - Remotely or on campus, when students require support- pre booked appointments based on availability.

Start date will be as soon as possible

Duties and responsibilities

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver structured one-to-one study skills sessions tailored to individual learning needs.
  • Help students develop strategies for reading, note-taking, research, time management, planning, organisation, and academic writing.
  • Encourage independent learning and promote self-management skills.
  • Support students to apply strategies across their academic work.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of all support sessions in accordance with DSA and university requirements.
  • Complete progress notes, timesheets, and reports promptly and accurately.
  • Liaise effectively with the Disability Advice and Support team to ensure joined-up and consistent student support.
  • Communicate professionally with students, academic staff, and DSA assessors as appropriate.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality at all times.
  • Work in accordance with DSA-QAG / NMH standards, Data Protection regulations, and DMU’s Equality and Diversity policy.
  • Engage in relevant CPD (Continuing Professional Development) and maintain professional membership status.

Expected Outcomes

  • Students are supported to develop greater academic independence and confidence.
  • Support provided meets the quality standards required by DSA and DMU.
  • Accurate and compliant records are maintained.
  • Positive feedback from students and colleagues regarding support effectiveness.

Skills and experience

Hold a current professional membership with PATOSS, BDA, ADSHE, or Dyslexia Guild.

Recognised teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE, Level 5/7 SpLD qualification, or equivalent).

Current CPD portfolio demonstrating ongoing professional development.

Experience providing one-to-one study skills support to students with SpLDs in higher or further education.

Understanding of the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) framework and non-medical helper roles.

Thorough understanding of specific learning differences and their impact on learning.

Ability to design and deliver sessions that promote independent learning and academic success.

Excellent organisational, communication, and record-keeping skills.

Awareness of data protection, confidentiality, and safeguarding principles.

Empathetic and student-centred approach.

Ability to work independently and manage own workload.

Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Flexible and proactive attitude to work.
