The University of Salford and Salford SU are offering a unique opportunity for students to gain skills in leadership, project management, organisational change for sustainability, communications and data analysis, as a paid Responsible Futures auditor.

Delivered by the educational charity, Students Organising for Sustainability UK (SOS UK), Responsible Futures is an accreditation of a whole institution’s commitment to holistic sustainability spanning the formal and informal curriculum and campus/estates. Holistic sustainability looks not only at environmental sustainability but also ethics, wellbeing, social justice, global citizenship, and moral responsibility.The University of Salford and Salford SU are preparing for their first-ever Responsible Futures audit taking place on Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 November 2025.

Depending on the number of criteria the partnership completes successfully, they can achieve either: Working Towards Responsible Futures or Responsible Futures Accreditation. Having participated in Responsible Futures this year, the institution and students’ union will need an audit to verify their level of achievement… and this is where you come in!

Duties and responsibilities

Commitment:

Two days 9:15am-4:15pm on Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 November.

This a paid post with great opportunities for professional and personal development through training and support. No technical knowledge or previous experience needed, just an interest in sustainability and education

Following the audit, you will be:

· Awarded a digital badge demonstrating your work to embed sustainability in learning. You can share this digital badge on LinkedIn and other social media.

· Invited to join SOS UK’s Alumni group on LinkedIn where you can network with other students and staff interested in sustainability, ask and answer questions, and learn about opportunities such as jobs and events, and more.

Skills and experience

  • Auditor Training: SOS UK auditor training will equip you with all the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to conduct audits over the 2 days.
  • Desk-based Audit: this will involve reviewing evidence submitted by your institution and Students’ Union in advance of the audit – ranging from multimedia files, to events, data, and strategies. You’ll get an in-depth and behind-the-scenes look at how change occurs at your institution.
  • Delivering interviews: there will be three key interviews including individuals from the Students’ Union and the University. You will be trained by SOS UK to lead the interviews alongside fellow student auditors.

You will always be working in pairs or teams and be supported by a member of the SOS UK Responsible Futures team.
