Role

This is a 12-week internship opportunity with Bambi Air Ltd as part of the WMG internship program.

This role involves supporting Bambi Air Ltd (“Bambi”), a well-established air compressor manufacturer, in the design and creation of CAD models for a range of existing and new air compressors. This internship will benefit your CAD skills and will provide you excellent knowledge and experience in product design and development in an innovation company.

The internship is based at the company site in Birmingham, and you will be working closely with the Bambi Air team, gaining first-hand experience in a manufacturing business. As part of the program, you will also benefit from weekly supervision and support by a WMG expert, throughout the duration of the project.

About the company:

Bambi is a leading manufacturer of small sized specialist air compressors designed for medical, dental, laboratory and OEM applications. The company is the only UK based manufacturer of scale focusing on the sub-10-bar air compressor market competing predominantly with European based manufacturers.

The company sells its compressors to a granular customer base in the UK and globally through a network of local distributors and service engineers. It enjoys a high level of repeat business having sold high quality compressors for the past 47 years. Bambi also sells to a blue chip OEMs who integrate Bambi’s compressors within their own equipment.

Bambi was established in 1977 by Laurence Clutterbuck who led the business up to July 2024 when Lucena Capital, a family office focusing on succession situations, acquired the company as part of Clutterbuck’s retirement plan. Lucena has an ambitious plan to develop the business through investments in people, technology and new product development.

Duties and responsibilities

Main activities in collaboration with the team at Bambi include:

  • Review existing design products for a range of air compressors
  • Identify key design units and auxiliary parts within the air compressor
  • CAD creation for required design components and assemblies for the complete air compressor unit
  • Documentation for all new drawings and improving existing product instruction manual
  • Contribute to improving information shared with existing and prospective customers
  • Contribute to the development of new website, including 3D visualisation from CAD drawings

Skills and experience

ESSENTIAL:

  • Educated to degree level in Mechanical/Design Engineering or similar
  • An understanding and appreciation of design for air compressor
  • Proficient in using CAD packages SolidWorks for parts creation and assemblies
  • Direct experience with product design and development from conceptual or physical product
  • Good verbal and written communication, time management and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaborated effectively
  • Self-motivated, driven, proactive and attention to detail
  •  

DESIRABLE:

  • Experience with SolidWorks Visualize/Composer or any 3D rendering package
  • Experiences using high-precision scanners, converting physical parts into 3D CAD models
  • Knowledge of air compressors components and their manufacturing techniques
  • Full UK driving licence could be beneficial
