Description

Role

We are seeking up to three enthusiastic and supportive post-graduate research (PGR) students to act as mentors for the Social Mobility Student Research Hub (SMSRH). The SMSRH supports students from underrepresented backgrounds to plan and then carry out a research project in areas relating to widening participation, social mobility and inequality over several months. You can find more about the SMSRH here https://warwick.ac.uk/study/outreach/studentprojects/.

As a PGR Mentor, you be expected to offer advice, guidance and support on a regular basis to your mentees (this will be in the form of hour-long meetings, a few times a month, for four students).  You will also be expected to attend and support workshops and other events where students will have opportunities to meet and develop their knowledge around research, including data collection and research ethics.  We are expecting the first introductory event to take place on campus on December 10th 2025. Mentors would need to be available for this date and have availability throughout the academic year to support mentees.

After the academic year ends (October 2026), the University will host a conference, where students and mentors will have the opportunity to tell other peers, staff members and the wider community about the projects.  This work may be presented in a range of formats, which will be discussed closer to the time.

The research can be conducted remotely from the university and contact time with your students can be face-to-face or online. We anticipate that this role will involve up to 40 hours in total.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Work with undergraduate students from a variety of different backgrounds to develop their research ideas, proposals and methodologies.
  • Support your mentees during the research process by holding regular meetings with them.
  • Attend, support and help to plan the conference at the end of the academic year.
  • Working with staff to ensure that projects are kept to time and outcomes are clear for all parties.
  • Promote relevant research materials and training activities to your mentees.
  • Be willing to share your own experiences of research both online and face to face with your mentees.

Attend campus events to help promote the work of the ‘Social Mobility Student Research Hub’
