Role
This role is for a Research Assistant supporting a project on the language of sports commentary. The project will explore language use patterns in a large set of Six Nations rugby match transcripts (around 49 hours of material). The main task will be to go through these transcripts carefully, correcting errors, making sure the words are accurate, adding in the right names of players and commentators, and dividing the text into clear sections (such as build-up, live play, and pundit talk). The role involves working closely with the project lead to ensure the transcripts are accurate, consistent, and ready for analysis.
Duties and responsibilities
The role involves the following duties and responsibilities:
- Transcript cleaning: Correct typographical and transcription errors to ensure the accuracy of the text.
- Speaker/name identification: Insert the correct names of players, commentators, and pundits where possible.
- Structural organisation: Separate and label sections of the transcript (e.g. pre-match build-up, live commentary, half-time analysis, post-match discussion).
- Quality control: Ensure the transcripts are consistent, clear, and ready for close linguistic analysis.
Skills and experience
The successful candidate will:
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work accurately with text.
- Familiarity with rugby (especially Six Nations teams, players, and commentators) is highly desirable.
