Role
AccessAbility at the University of Leicester is seeking to recruit Accessible Support Assistants to work with Visually Impaired students to provide practical support in the form or sighted guiding and note-taking. This may mean providing mobility assistance around campus as well as providing high quality notes from lectures and seminars as required.

 

About the AccessAbility Centre

The University of Leicester is committed to inclusivity, through promoting equality and valuing diversity among our students. The University’s Student Support Services form part of this commitment to students and AccessAbility (AAC) is one of these services offering support and advice to disabled students across all courses and at all levels of study. The Study Assistant role is administered by the AAC and works to support disabled students in acclimatising to life at the university and navigating the campus safely.

Duties and responsibilities
Support for the student as required according to their differing needs as directed by supervising staff; for example, general orientation, mobility assistance around campus, taking accurate notes for taught sessions and formatting them as directed by the supervising staff based on the needs of the student(s).

 
This role is student-led and will be driven by the needs of the student that you will be working with in conjunction with guidance from the supervising staff in AccessAbility.
 
You will need to maintain records and other administrative documents that are of a personal and sensitive nature and be compliant with the university GDPR/ Data Protection regulations.

Skills and experience
Reliability and punctuality are vital; you will need good organisational skills and excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate sensitively. It will be key for you to work independently and without supervision to undertake the core activities for the role.

 
It will be necessary to be able to work in a variety of settings and a knowledge of the university campus and the environs would be beneficial.
 
Experience of working within a similar role/setting,  and/or providing support for disabled adults would be advantageous. You will need to be compassionate with a person-centred approach to individuals with complex needs.
 
You should be willing to attend relevant training courses prior to the commencement of any work should these be required.

It is anticipated that support will be required during term time for the whole of the 25-26 Academic Year.

Hours and days

Dependent on the requirements of the student(s) and the schedule of teaching sessions. The number of hours may vary over the course of the academic year and regular hours of work cannot be guaranteed. This role cannot, therefore, provide a full-time wage.
