Role
AccessAbility at the University of Leicester is seeking to recruit a part-time Specialist Study Skills Support worker to work with autistic students. The post-holder will work up to 20 hours a week.
Duties and responsibilities
As a Specialist Study Skills Support worker, you will be responsible for providing study support to students with various and sometimes complex conditions including Autism Spectrum Conditions, communication or organisation difficulties. You will build professional working relationships with a caseload of students combining a person-centred approach with an understanding of the student’s condition, to support students with their academic progress.
One-to-One sessions will comprise offering relevant advice and guidance on university systems and providing support with study skills, strategies and techniques. Successful candidates will be responsible for undertaking relevant CPD to maintain their membership in order to be able to work with students who are funded by the Disabled Students’ Allowance.
Liaison with academic departments may be required in order to enable disabled students to achieve their full potential and facilitate the University's compliance with disability legislation.
The accurate administration of timesheets, which serve as the post-holder’s record of work and as evidence that support has been provided to particular student(s), is also expected.
All AccessAbility workers are expected to maintain a high standard of confidentiality regarding student information in accordance with university guidelines on GDPR and Data Protection.
Specialist Study Skills Support workers will liaise with the AccessAbility Autistic Spectrum Specialist Study Advisers, to discuss any issues arising from one-to-one sessions with students and to share good practice.
Skills and experience
You will have a membership of a professional body and qualifications as recognised within the “DfE Mandatory Criteria” for Specialist Mentors.
You will be competent with IT, including the use of email and Microsoft Office, as well as having demonstrable communication skills in written, oral and face-to-face contexts as well as patience, pragmatism, problem-solving, diplomacy and empathy.
Location
AccessAbility, Percy Gee Building, University of Leicester. With prior agreement by the Head of Service, work may be conducted remotely, via MS Teams.
