Role
The University of Edinburgh is currently offering a part-time opportunity for a student to join the Website and Communications Team as a Web Development Intern. The Website and Communications team are responsible for a number of university services including the EdWeb 2 University Drupal Website Platform, Web Search, and the MyEd Student Portal. Within this role you will support the EdWeb 2 (Drupal) website platform, by building a central dashboard that will collect vital data from over 160 websites to allow the team to monitor the health of websites, respond to support calls quicker, and report back on the status of the platform.
This internship is a great opportunity for you to gain practical experience in application design, Drupal ecosystems, and agile project workflows.
You can expect to start work on the 3rd November 2025 and work until November 2026. You can expect to work 14 hours per week in a hybrid pattern, one day per week working from home and one day per week in the office in Argyle House (Edinburgh). During this position, you will be paid £13.01 per hour, plus £2.35 per hour holiday pay. Payment is one month in arrears, meaning your first payment date (should this position start when expected) will be 19th December 2025.
Duties and responsibilities
- Designing and developing a custom web-based dashboard to aggregate data (traffic, error logs, users, ownership) from multiple EdWeb 2 sites into a single platform;
- Integrating diverse data sources and application programming interfaces (APIs) to collect and standardise information across the Drupal-based estate;
- Implementing and testing application functionality, ensuring the tool is reliable, secure, and user-friendly;
- Documenting technical architecture, code, and user guidance to support long-term maintenance and knowledge transfer.
Skills and experience
Essential criteria:
- A current Undergraduate, Postgraduate taught, or part-time Postgraduate Research student at the University of Edinburgh (this post is designated for UoE student employment; therefore, you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). You also must not hold the position of ‘Resident Assistant’;
- Based in the UK for the duration of the work, able to work on campus when required (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications), and able to attend a Right to Work Check in person if you are a British or Irish Passport holder;
- Evidence of a basic understanding of web development concepts (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or similar);
- Proven familiarity with at least one programming language, preferably Python;
- A proven interest in working with content management systems (CMS) such as Drupal or WordPress;
- Evidence of strong problem-solving skills;
- A proven ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Prior experience of using or developing with Drupal or another enterprise-scale CMS;
- Knowledge of data handling, logging, or analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics, error monitoring systems);
- Experience in using version control tools, such as Git.
