The Environmental Sustainability Service within Knowsley Council is responsible for the a variety of services that range from the maintenance and development of green spaces and playing fields, tree planting initiatives, working with schools to develop environmental education, energy conservation projects and varying climate change actions from the decarbonisation of buildings to behaviour change projects. 

As part of the Net Zero Agenda, the intern will primarily be assisting the Climate Emergency Team to analyse energy data for Knowsley Schools and develop an energy efficiency action plan based on this data. The intern will also respond on an ad-hoc basis to other climate, energy and green space relatedprojects.

 

Duties and responsibilities
Primarily, the successful intern will be working with energy data from the Councils Energy Management System. This will be an interesting role that will require the intern to analyse large data sets of energy data, primarily relating to schools, and present this data in an interactive format. 

 
The intern will also develop an engagement plan that will outline steps to improve energy efficiency in schools based on the results from the data. This plan will be focused on interactive engagement methods that can be used to educate schoolchildren and staff on energy efficiency by presenting the data in an engaging way. The intern will also be required to make suggestions on how to improve energy efficiency from their own research and support from the wider team. 
 
Additionally, the intern will provide support to the Climate Emergency Team to enable the implementation of the Climate Change Action Plan and the Net Zero Delivery Plan 2022-2025 for the Council, working closely with services across the Council.

Skills and experience

  • Have an interest and knowledge in the area of climate change and ability to provide advice and support on various climate change topics including active travel and behaviour change techniques.
  • Ability to research, collate and analyse written and numerical data in order to draw logical conclusions.
  • Good communication skills and ability to adapt to ad-hoc enquiries relating to a variety of environmental issues including climate change and sport and physical activity projects.
