The internship position will provide efficient and high quality administrative support to the Senior Coroner and Area Coroner forthe Liverpool & Wirral Coroner Area.
Duties and responsibilities
Main duties will all be subject to appropriate supervision and will include:
- Updating Coroners Database and production of documentation relating to the cases reported to the Coroner. Liaising with Coroner’s Officers regarding information required.
- Maintaining the Coroner’s Register of Deaths, as required by the Coroner’s (Investigations) Regulations 2013.
- Summoning of jurors on attendance at the Court, regarding their eligibility to sit, Court procedures and the financial allowances payable in respect of their Jury Service, including Loss of Earnings or Benefits.
- Jury Clerk duties in accordance with availability and dealing with enquiries from bereaved relatives regarding the procedures involved when a death is reported to the Coroner.
- Dealing with enquiries from the medical profession and public relating to post-mortem examination and Inquest records, including the retrieval of archived material from the Liverpool Record Office.
- Liaison with the Registrar of Deaths regarding the issue of Coroner’s certificates following the conclusion of an Inquest, ensuring that such information is correct, in accordance with the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1953.
- Liaising with funeral directors, mortuary staff and bereavement offices regarding the release of bodies following post-mortem examination.
Skills and experience
No specific qualifications or experience are required but the candidate should be:
- Willing to learn.
- IT literate
- Able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Able to work under pressure and to meet deadlines.
- Able to take comprehensive and accurate notes of proceedings.
