Download application form Strawberry Field, the iconic site managed by The Salvation Army and immortalised by John Lennon and the Beatles, is a visitor attraction at the heart of Liverpool tourism. The centre offers an authentic experience with a strong commitment to responsible tourism running central to every aspect of its operation. In addition to our commercial offerings of a Visitor Exhibition, Imagine More Café, gift shop and beautifully designed gardens, the centre is also home to the Steps to Work Programmes, a set of initiatives for members of the community who have learning difficulties or other barriers to work, providing them with valuable support and opportunities for meaningful employment. The site also hosts the Fresh Expression Team, who run a number of groups and activities to engage and uplift the local community, including those with additional support needs. We are looking for help to develop the famous gardens where John Lennon once found sanctuary, to enhance visitor experiences and meet our sustainable tourism goals.

Duties and responsibilities
Sensory Garden Design and Development Assistant:

The project is to design and assist with the development of a sensory garden within the grounds of Strawberry Field. The design should appeal to and be accessible for individuals with a range of support needs such as sensory processing difficulties, dementia groups, people with visual impairments, neurodivergent visitors and children.

Area to be planned and designed to include the following sensory elements:• Sight – use of colour, texture, and layout to create visual interest.• Smell – incorporation of fragrant plants and aromatic herbs.• Touch – textural variety in plant materials and surfaces.• Taste – inclusion of safe, edible plants (e.g., herbs, fruits).• Sound – use of natural or designed sound elements (e.g., rustling grasses, wind chimes).

Design Considerations:• Accessibility – the primary focus of the project is to create a space that is welcoming and easily accessible to all.
• Sustainability – the use of eco-friendly, responsibly sourced materials should be a priority.
• Suitability of the area – an audit of the proposed area to assess ground conditions and soil quality for planting is vital to the success of the project.
• Wildlife friendly – incorporating indigenous, non-toxic plants and pollinators to actively encourage biodiversity and support local wildlife should be a main consideration.
• Maintenance – aim for a design that will be low maintenance, as we will rely on volunteers to assist with maintaining the sensory garden.
• Seasonal interest – thought should be given to how the sensory garden can be visually engaging throughout all seasons.

Skills and experience
The successful candidate will:• Demonstrate excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage professionally with all members of the team.

• Work independently, showing initiative in conducting research and generating innovative ideas to advance the project.
• Possess strong analytical skills, capable of evaluating information and producing comprehensive, well-structured reports on their findings.
• Present findings confidently to the team in a clear, professional and engaging manner.
• Effectively manage their own workload to meet agreed deadlines.
• Be proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
