Role

The overall purpose of the role is to provide peer support, information, advice and guidance to students living in University of Northampton halls of residences. This will be delivered to students through flat meetings, drop-in sessions and 1- 2-1 support both virtually or in person, in group settings and through student activities and events.

PLEASE NOTE YOU MUST BE A STUDENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTHAMPTON TO APPLY FOR THIS ROLE.

Primarily a pastoral role, you will also assist in reporting and managing any behavioural issues that arise in halls. In addition, you will work alongside the Student Behaviour Coordinators to assist with the promotion, implementation and supervision of student activities and events.

You will also be expected to conduct flat meetings, champion student initiatives and support the Residential Life Team as and when required. Residential Life Assistants will be required to work evenings and occasional weekends.

Duties and responsibilities

• To listen and provide support, advice and guidance to students on a wide range of topics throughout the year and signpost to other agencies/ departments where necessary.

• Actively aid and support students during the transition into University life and residences.

• Help to deliver a range of Welcome Week activities to welcome students to the University of Northampton

• Be able to identify when a student may be experiencing difficulties and help develop a plan of support.

• Possess a good knowledge and understanding of University departments and external community organisations; and to refer students as appropriate

• To assist the Residential Life team to continually improve the welfare of students in accommodation. 

• To provide one to one support to students as and when required 

• To provide mediation to flat mates facing shared-living difficulties.

• Produce accurate, detailed reports regarding daily occurrences and significant events whilst recognising and protecting confidential and sensitive information.

• To ensure that all casework-related admin is dealt with in a consistent and timely manner.

• Engage in the promotion and implementation of awareness-raising events and campaign activities on student issues.

• To support Residential Life Team over Arrivals Weekend/ Move Out weekends/ Key dates to ensure smooth transition processes for students in more stressful times.

• The post holder will be expected to undertake other responsibilities and tasks as reasonably requested by their manager or second line manager.

• To attend a weekly team meeting.

• To complete compulsory training as required.

• Contribute to your immediate team and the wider team, including University of Northampton Site Staff, ensuring good communication and co-operation.

• To ensure you observe service policies as communicated to you.

• Recognise your own limitations and work within them, seeking support and guidance as necessary.

• To adhere to the University of Northampton confidentiality policy when dealing with highly confidential and sensitive information

• The post holder will be responsible and accountable for ensuring all employment legislative requirements are adhered to including equality and diversity and health and safety issues

Skills and experience

Educated to GCSE/O Level or equivalent level qualifications or experience

 Knowledge of key issues that affect students including an understanding of issues related to shared living, accommodation, academic, finance and wellbeing

 Experience of working independently

 Experience of dealing with difficult, sensitive or unexpected situations

 Ability to initiate contact with other students in a confident manner

 Ability to establish strong working relationships with a range of individuals

 Ability to ensure observation of service procedures, for example maintaining confidentiality

 Flexible and responsive to service/student

 Excellent spoken communication and ability to work  in a team and independently

 Excellent listening and communication skills

 Approachable, personable and empathic

 Self-motivated, self-reliant and able to use own initiative to solve problems

 Awareness of own limitations and boundaries

Additional information

You will be required to attend 3 full days of training for this role  - dates TBC.

You will be required to work at all halls of residence locations - Waterside, St Johns and Scholars Green.
