Are you a current student at LJMU and interested in sharing your knowledge and experience of university to help motivate and aspire other people to enter higher education?
We are looking to increase our pool of Student Advocates who play an essential role in our student recruitment and widening access programmes. You must be enthusiastic to promote the university to various prospective students such as young people aged 11- 18 years, mature students or Postgraduate students. You must be able to work on your own initiative and have a confident, friendly and approachable disposition. We are keen to ensure that our Student Advocates are representative of the student body at LJMU and therefore welcome applications from all sectors of the community, including mature students, postgraduate students, care leavers, disabled students and students from black and minority ethnic backgrounds. We also want advocates that represent a range of courses from across the University’s faculties.
If appointed, you will be offered a fair share of the opportunities to work on campus visits, open days and other events run by the Student Recruitment and Admissions team or other teams across the university.
Duties and responsibilities
Under the direction and supervision of LJMU staff and according to guidelines and procedures laid out (and covered in mandatory training) Advocates may take be required to complete some of the following:
• Act as a positive role model to the participants, promoting and raising awareness of higher education and sharing their experiences of student life.
• Work with participants during visits, workshops and campus tours under the direction of LJMU staff. Encourage positive behaviour, constantly work on own initiative and bring to the attention of staff any problems.
• Aid the session leader in the delivery of workshops using a pre-defined programme. This includes listening and taking instruction from the session leader.
• Lead campus tours using a pre-defined script:
• take participants around the campus showing them the facilities available
• explain what each facility visited is and who it is used for
• Deliver and devise student life talks, subject taster sessions and University workshops; share experiences of higher education and university life with participants at school/colleges or during visit days. Answer any questions relating to higher education or life as a student. Pre-written presentations are available for students to use.
• Supervise participants as directed when they are not engaged in activities, e.g. during lunch and trips to and from toilets and other facilities (if participants are young people).
• Accompany participants in travelling from one part of the campus to another, including keeping the group together and safely crossing roads. Ensure that all are accounted for.
• Be aware of potential risks to the participants and ensure that staff are made aware of them and participants are clearly advised of the appropriate course of action.
• Assist at university and faculty open days
• Support the wider SR&A team during the clearing period.
• Carry out any other duties in line with the grade and in line with the SR&A team’s objectives, as deemed appropriate by a member of the SR&A team.
Skills and experience
- Must have good communication skills and be able to express self clearly, both verbally and in writing. Must be able to listen to instructions from session leaders and communicate them effectively to small groups.
- Must be confident in speaking to and leading small groups on a campus tour.
- Demonstrate motivation to help and support people from a variety of backgrounds into higher education or to continue within higher education.
- Enthusiastic, positive and able to motivate.
- Able to interact effectively and build a rapport with visitors.
- Able to engage visitors in the activities of the day and respond appropriately.
- Able to explain the benefits of a university education, talk about your own experiences of student finance and discuss the variety of educational opportunities available.
- Friendly and approachable when working with people of all ages. Professional attitude towards work, punctual and reliable.
- Can be relied upon to work on their own initiative.
- Non-judgemental to any information told or overheard.
- Discreet.
- Responsible attitude and able to supervise groups of young people.
- Must be confident in talking about, knowledge and experience of life as a student to groups of people.
- Knowledge of and ability to use AV equipment and computer software including Microsoft Office.
- Must be a current LJMU student at the time of appointment.
