Role
The University of Edinburgh is currently offering a part-time opportunity for a student to join the uCreate team as a Student Technician, specialising in 3D digitisation. Based in the Main Library, uCreate provides equipment, advice, training, and support to help students and staff make (almost) anything! Within this role, you will deliver training and support specifically in areas including structured light scanning, photogrammetry, LIDAR scanning, and 3D scanning post-processing. You will help to maintain kit and components, all while providing an approachable, knowledgeable staff presence for Makerspace users interested in using 3D digitisation equipment within their projects.
This is an exciting opportunity for you to gain experience in presenting to a range of audiences, and managing the safe use and maintenance of complex equipment while developing your skills in 3D digitisation.
You can expect to start work on the 20th October 2025 and work until 20th October 2026, working 6 hours per week based in the uCreate Makerspace in the Main Library. The general working hours are 2:00pm – 8:00pm on one day per week, and 10:00am – 4:00pm during the induction period. During this position you will be paid £16.21 per hour, plus £2.93 per hour holiday pay. Payment is one month in arrears, meaning your first payment date (should this position start when expected) will be 28th November 2025. We are also currently hiring for 2 other positions in uCreate: Electronics Advert, and Multimedia Advert.
Duties and responsibilities
- Delivering support for Makerspace 3D digitisation activites, including 1:1 and group training sessions outlining safe and appropriate use of 3D digitisation equipment offered;
- Providing general support for the wider Makerspace equipment provision, including general IT support (training will be provided as required);
- Maintaining a friendly staff presence, facilitating the safe use of equipment, and supervising where necessary;
- Assisting with the upkeep and organisation of 3D digitisation equipment, reporting any safety or maintenance issues, whilst proactively solving problems within the scope of your experience.
Skills and experience
Essential criteria:
- A current University of Edinburgh student (this post is designated for UoE student employment; therefore, you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). You also must not hold the position of ‘Resident Assistant’;
- Based in the UK for the duration of the work, able to work on campus when required (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications), and able to attend a Right to Work Check in person if needed;
- Demonstrable specialism with 3D digitisation, for example during university projects or societies, or in your free time;
- Proven ability to communicate complex information clearly to a non-technical audience, while showcasing excellent interpersonal skills;
- Evidence of experience with 3D scanning, post processing and meshing considerations.
- Proven experience in additive, subtractive and formative manufacture & semi;
- Demonstrable experience of calibration and lighting considerations of both photography and video capture & semi;
- Evidence of experience using LIDAR technology.
