Role
The Project Assistant will support the smooth running of the BA/Leverhulme-funded sociophonetic research project 'Anticipatory nasal coarticulation in Standard Southern British English and Multicultural London English'. They will assist the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr Roy Alderton, in obtaining and processing data for the project.

Duties and responsibilities
Specific duties include: 

 
- Advertising the study and arranging recording sessions with participants.
 
- Facilitating recording sessions on City St George's campus.
 
- Creating, organising and processing project materials and data.
 
- Arranging payment of participants.

Skills and experience

Essential:

-A Bachelor's degree or higher in Linguistics, English Language, Speech and Language Therapy or a similar subject, or currently studying for one.

- Familiarity with concepts and methods involved in undertaking empirical research projects in sociophonetics and related subjects, ideally through hands-on experience such as a Bachelor's or Master's dissertation.

- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.

- Excellent interpersonal skills to be able to work effectively with colleagues and participants.

- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

- Ability to prioritise work and adapt to new demands.

- Excellent IT skills in common computer software (e.g. Microsoft Office) and willingness to learn new technical skills.

- Excellent organisational skills to be able to keep track of participants and data.

Desirable:

- Experience of using specialist software such as Praat, Audacity and/or R for phonetic and statistical analysis.

- Knowledge of sociophonetic variation in English, nasal coarticulation and/or sound change.

- Connections with communities of Standard Southern British English and Multicultural London English speakers in London.

- Familiarity with GDPR and related issues regarding the legal and ethical treatment of personal data.

Working pattern: TBC - 2 days a week to be worked flexibly (12hrs per week). 

This role is open to current students. 

The role is hybrid, some work can be completed from home and some requiring physical attendance. Most face-to-face work will be done on City campus but occasionally may involve public spaces e.g. handing out flyers on the street or visiting other universities in London and community spaces to advertise the study.
