Role

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, Dr Jamelia Harris (https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/ier/people/jharris/). We are seeking a Research Assistant to support an innovative research project which links colonial legacies and the contemporary labour market in the English-speaking Caribbean. The project will investigate how the institutions, laws (written/unwritten) and general structures of governance in the colonial period in the English-speaking Caribbean can still shape present day institutions like the labour market.

The successful candidate will work on the legal component of the project and analyse the laws and legal documents specific to the labour market in four Caribbean countries. 

Duties and responsibilities

  • Identify laws and documents related to the labour market from the ILO legal repository (NATLEX) for Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago
  • Read the relevant laws and summarise how each would have shaped the economy and labour market
  • Analyse documents, extracting trends and patterns and visualise these where appropriate
  • Contribute to the literature review on legal systems in the English-speaking Caribbean
  • With the PI, draft a summary report detailing the main findings
  • Document research procedures and maintain organised research records
  • Contribute to regular project team meetings and discussions

Skills and experience

Essential

  • Master's level qualification in a Social Sciences discipline or law, or equivalent research experience    
  • Background in law (e.g. undergraduate degree, certificate or other professional training)
  • Strong qualitive research skills 
  • Experience handling large-scale survey datasets
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment
  • Excellent organisational skills with ability to meet research deadlines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Desirable 

  • Knowledge or experience in the English-speaking Caribbean
  • Familiarity with research on legal systems
