  • Provide Mobility and Practical support to disabled students who have a physical and/or impairment in manoeuvring around campus.
  • Providing orientation support to students
  • Working with students who can potentially have seizures
  • Some of this support will be provided for the duration of the student’s course, others such as general orientation will be for a shorter time frame

You will work varied part time hours on a flexible basis - shifts will be offered and allocated based on student need, Training dates for this role will commence w/c 15/09/2025 and you will work around the academic year until July 2026

Duties and responsibilities

  • Provide mobility and practical support which can include:
  • Carrying books /bags
  • Lifting and carrying equipment under student’s instruction
  • Supporting a student with epilepsy in teaching sessions. Specific duties may include: contacting first aiders/external services, timing seizures, maintaining dignity and privacy for the student at all times.
  • Manipulate/ Push manual wheelchair
  • Orientation support on campus
  • Support in workshops which can include the following:
  • Assistance with equipment in workshops/labs
  • Supporting the student with accessing appropriate machinery/equipment whilst in the workshops and labs in line with the health and safety regulations.

(Health and Safety induction to workshops will be required for this)

  • Assisting with other mobility and practical duties as requested by the Non-Medical Helper Co-ordinator
  • The ability to navigate around campus, including buildings.
  • Always be punctual
  • Effective communication
  • Complete timesheets accurately each week
  • Escalate any issues to the Non-Medical Coordinator or other relevant DMU staff/external services at the earliest opportunity
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Keep accurate records of time spent with student for payment purposes
  • Treat all DMU staff, students, contractors and visitors with dignity and respect. Skills and experience

Essential:

  • Punctual, well organised and reliable. 
  • Good communication skills ability to work within professional boundaries and maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work independently and use initiative.   
  • A willingness to attend training relevant to the role as required.

Desirable:

  • Experience of working in an education setting with Disabled students including epilepsy.
  • Evidence of training or relevant experience relevant to working with disabled students.  
  • Current First Aid qualification.
