Role

Liverpool John Moores University’s has a proud history of supporting care experienced & estranged students, with provision embedded across all aspects of the student experience. Thanks to a donation from The Cornerstones Foundation, we are seeking a care experienced LJMU graduate who can help enhance our work with students approaching the ‘care cliff’. Many care experienced & estranged young people are expected to leave care or move to being fully independent before they are ready. As Employability Intern, your will scaffold their successful transition from degree study and into their early careers

The role is part of a new and innovative programme, enabled through The Cornerstone Foundation’s donation, that will also include emergency transition-related funding, peer mentoring and LJMU-certified forward planning workshops.

Duties and responsibilities

Duties:

  • Act as a first point of contact for care experienced students seeking transitional support out of the university, into jobseeking and into their early careers
  • Engage in outreach and speculative contact with care experienced students & graduates as part of Student Futures’ graduate call centres and campaigns, including collaborating with the Digital Services & Engagement team to create & issue updates and social media posts
  • Refer care experienced students & graduates to appropriate transitional support, both general (e.g. 1:1 careers advice & guidance; employer events & recruitment fairs; Start-Up support; Unitemps) and targeted (e.g. internships, networking & mentoring via LJMU’s Access & Participation Plan). Where relevant, follow agreed processes to allocate transition-related funds to students & graduates
  • Working alongside careers specialists in the Student Futures team, support students to prepare for applications & interviews, including developing narratives that showcase their skills & strengths and facilitating effective use of digital tools
  • Research regional and national sources of additional support, promoting these to care experienced graduates and supporting access to them
  • Research, and share details of, employers that are actively supportive of care experienced employees
  • Coordinate Pathway Mentoring partnerships between care experienced students & graduates and external professionals, supporting career insight, successful transition and professional progression
  • Collate case studies and insight from care experienced graduates on their post-study experience, feeding these back to current students (including as guest speakers) and to LJMU colleagues to inform future delivery
  • Prepare evaluation and reports on the progress of the Cornerstones initiative
  • Represent the Cornerstones initiative and care experienced students & graduates in relevant LJMU forums and working groups

Skills and experience

Person Specification:

Essential:

  • A demonstrable understanding, acquired through lived experience, of the needs of care experienced & estranged students
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and in-person
  • Experience of working empathetically with others to enable them to maximise their potential
  • Highly organised. Prioritises and manages time effectively and meets deadlines and targets
  • Good understanding of careers, employability & enterprise support in higher education and LJMU
  • Excellent administrative & IT skills. Proficient in use of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook & Teams

 

Desirable:

  • Marketing & communications experience, including social media
