Role
The University of Edinburgh is currently offering a part-time opportunity for 15 students to join the Library Academic Support Team as Library Tour Guides. The Library Academic Support Team work in partnership with Schools and Colleges, and directly with students, to communicate about library resources and services, so that students get the best from their studies and research. Within this role, you will provide basic tours of the Main Library or Murray Library during the Welcome Week period (6th-14th September 2023), helping new students to feel welcome, find their bearings, and become aware of Library facilities and services. This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience in public speaking and working in a team, whilst playing a key part in welcoming new students.
You can expect to start work on the 4th or 5th September 2025 (with a 1 hour paid training session on one of these days) and work until the 14th September 2025. You will work between 9-10 hours per week in the Main Library, George Square, and the Noreen and Kenneth Murray Library located at Kings Buildings. The shift pattern for this role is 2-hour shifts between 10:00-16:00, tours will start from the 6th September 2025. During this position you will be paid £12.83 per hour, plus £2.32 per hour holiday pay. Payment is one month in arrears, meaning your payment date for work done in September will be the 28th October 2025. There is a possibility of extending this role into October for the two Undergraduate Open Days, with details of this to be discussed after the role begins. Duties and responsibilities
In this role you will:
- Provide brief tours of the Main Library or Murray Library, including raising awareness of key services, facilities and resources available to students;
- Create a friendly, inclusive and welcoming experience for new students at The University of Edinburgh;
- Answer questions, or guide enquirers to the EdHelp Helpdesk for more detailed or non-library related questions;
- Check that attendees have booked a place on a tour, record attendance, and ensure that safety guidance is communicated to the group.
Skills and experience
Essential Criteria
- A current University of Edinburgh returning student (this post is designated for UoE student employment; therefore, you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). You must not be an incoming student starting in or after September 2025. You also must not hold the position of ‘Resident Assistant’;
- Based in the UK for the duration of the work, able to work fully on campus, and able to attend a Right to Work Check in person before the 27th August if you are a British or Irish Passport holder;
- Evidence of excellent public speaking, or verbal communication skills;
- A proven ability to be punctual and reliable.
- Demonstrable knowledge of the resources and services which the library provides to students.
Location
Main Library, George Square, and the Noreen and Kenneth Murray Library, at Kings Buildings.
